“Fuck, Kat you’re bleeding. We need to get you to the hospital.” He said as he rushed over, and I waved him away.

“No. I’m fine it’s just a graze. I have everything I need to fix it here.” I mumbled before I went over to the drawer.

I looked at the contents and realized what he had taken. A photo album. Of me and my parents.

Why the hell did they take that?

“Kat, you are bleeding from your feet and your head. You need medical attention.” Riley said as he turned me around, his brown eyes searching mine.

“How did you get here Riley?” I asked and he frowned.

“I heard you give the address for your neighbor’s place today to the locksmith. I drove over when you refused to answer my calls.” He said and I tried to shove him out the way.

“I’m fine, Riley,” I said as I went to the office to see if the other man had taken anything.

Riley grabbed my shoulders, spinning me around and holding me firmly.

“You are not fine, Katerina. I arrived to see two men running off into the darkness after hearing gunshots and finding you holding a gun, covered in blood. If you won’t go to the hospital, at least let me make sure you are okay.” He snapped and I raised an eyebrow at him.

“Fine,” I muttered, wondering where this side of Riley had been hiding. I’d never heard his voice sound so… masculine and forceful before.

“But before you do that, I need you to get my phone from my bedroom. I have to make a call.” I said and he looked at me like I had grown another head.

“Who could you possibly be calling right now?” He said as I opened the cabinet above the sink and found my first aid kit.

“The police. Well, a police officer.” I muttered and he nodded, satisfied with the answer, and walked down the hallway to my room.

I pulled out the items I would need before I rummaged through the cupboard for the cheap vodka because I had forgotten to stock up on antiseptic from my clean-up incident, then laid everything out on the counter then looked at my arm.

A graze. I was lucky. I wouldn’t have to dig a bullet out, something I had experienced once before and never wanted to do again.

Riley came back into my kitchen with my phone, eyeing the counter with all the items I had.

I filled a bowl full of warm water and tossed in a clean tea towel then used it to wipe the blood away.

“There is a name in my phone, Liam Walker. I need you to call him.” I said as I prepared the suture.

Riley glanced at me, his eyes wide as he scrolled through my phone and dialed the number.

“Can you put it on loudspeaker please?” I said as I took a deep breath, poured some vodka over the wound, took a swig myself then slid the needle through my skin.

Fuck it hurt.

The movies made it seem like it was easy, but stitching your own skin together came with a particular type of grit to push through the pain.

“Walker,” Liam answered and I smirked at the sound of a baby wailing in the background.

“I hear the baby has arrived,” I said with a laugh before I bit the inside of my cheek.

“Katerina. What trouble are we in now?” He asked and I sighed.

“None. It isn’t you. I need you to call off a dispatch for shots fired at a residential address.” I said and Liam sighed.

“Where?” he asked, and I glanced at Riley.

“My house. Canterbury Lane.” I added as I heard him mutter to someone.

“I can’t just leave it unanswered in that neighborhood. I’ll make the trip myself. Do we need to be concerned?” He asked and I grimaced.
