“Dude. This is some big stuff you are asking about. What’s going on? Is this something to do with Tommy?” He asked and I sighed.

Of course he would think that. Steve had been one of my best mates in school, our common ground being our background coming from England.

He went on to do big things after being offered a contract with ASIO in their security sector, not that I was supposed to know that.

That didn’t stop him from helping me out from time to time.

“No. I don’t really know what this is. Thanks though. I hope Em and the girls are good.” I said, trying to distract him with talks about his wife and twin daughters.

“Yeah. They started crawling. Little demons are getting into everything. Em can’t take her eyes off them.” He chuckled and I smiled.

“Ham, don’t think I am so easily distracted. I don’t know what it is you are getting involved with but be careful. I can only pull so many strings, you know?” He said softly and I sighed.

“I know. Thanks again. We should have drinks soon.” I hung up the phone and looked at Katerina’s house.

Who was she really? I had clearly underestimated her. One thing was for sure, I fully intended to find out.

Fifteen

Leo

Iwatched Katerina disappear into the house, Riley sitting in the car next to me.

They had both stayed the night and we had spent the day in Riley’s café.

The man was clearly in love with her, and something had happened. I knew she had confessed her secrets to him, and he was still here, which told me he was so far off the deep end in love that I really shouldn’t interfere but damn, I was selfish.

“So, what is your deal? You aren’t just a bodyguard, no matter what the two of you say.” Riley said suddenly and I looked at him with interest.

“What makes you say that?” I asked and he smirked.

“Because I see the way you look at her.” He said and I snorted in amusement. The guy was observant.

“Nothing has happened,” I said and he raised an eyebrow at me.

“But you want it to.” He said and I didn’t reply. We didn’t need to do this. I had no interest in getting into a pissing contest with this guy over a woman who wasn’t either of ours. Yet.

“I’m not going anywhere.” He said softly and I looked at him, saw the determination in his eyes.

“What?” I asked, not sure what he meant.

“I’m not going anywhere. I love her. I have for years and I am staying in her life no matter what. I don’t care what that means for you or for me. I’ll take anything I can get.” He said and I saw the hint of sadness in his eyes before he looked away.

“I wasn’t going to ask you to leave.” I said softly and I considered our options.

“I met some people with Rina the other day. The same kind of people in her world. They had an interesting arrangement.” I watched him narrow his eyes.

“What kind of arrangement?” He asked and I smiled.

“The men shared their woman. It was one of those poly style relationships.” I said and he shook his head.

“I don’t want to share her around like she is a piece of meat. You’re crazy.” He muttered and I sighed.

“I don’t mean it like that. I mean they were in a committed relationship with her. All of them. Like a big family.” I said, watching as he took that in.

“So what you are saying is we should both be with her? You want to share?” He asked and I shrugged.

“Beats not having her at all and forcing her to choose. She is scared enough of commitment, making her choose between two of us just complicates it more. Besides, doing what she does, I kind of feel more comfortable knowing that one of us would be with her at any time you know?” I said and he nodded then cocked his head slightly.
