His black sunglasses and few day-old stubble made him look even more intimidating and I caught the line of a gun beneath his jacket.

He glanced around the street, and I was glad that the small hedge out the front of my porch hid me slightly from view as I ducked down from his sight.

I watched as he walked toward my neighbor’s home and disappeared down the side of her house.

I looked at the car and made a note of the number plate before I rashly decided to follow him.

Call me crazy, but I didn’t like the look of the guy and I strangely felt protective over my neighbor.

I crept down the side, seeing the man examining the new glass door. He pulled out something from his pocket and began to pick the lock and anger rolled through me.

It was hypocritical, I had technically broken into her place as well, but I didn’t want to hurt her, and this man didn’t look kind.

“Can I help you mate?” I said loudly and he stood straight, his hand reaching beneath his jacket then pausing when he saw me.

“I don’t need help. Just trying to get into my place. I forgot the keys.” He said and I had to give it to the guy, he had balls lying like that.

I also noticed he had a thick Russian accent which led me to believe he was connected in some way to my neighbor.

“Ah huh. I’ve never seen you here before. What was your name?” I asked and he smiled.

“I have been out of town. I thought I would surprise Katerina.” He said and I raised an eyebrow.

“She won’t be home for a while,” I said, hoping I was telling the truth.

“Is that so? Who are you again?” He asked as he glanced at the door and decided to walk away.

“Her neighbor,” I said, not giving him a name.

“Just doing your neighborhood watch then hey? Well, neighbor. I will be seeing you around.” He said and I nodded stiffly, stepping aside, and watching him walk away.

I looked over her house and felt uneasy.

I watched the car roll away and pulled out my phone, dialing a friend.

“Steve. I need a number plate run.” I said and gave him the details.

“Privately owned by some random Russian business that seems to be an umbrella company for a bunch of smaller ones.” Steve said and I sighed.

That wouldn’t help me.

“Hold on.” He said as I heard the clicking of a keyboard.

“I found a name that is connected to one of the companies. Egor Burgov. It looks like he entered the country a few days ago along with….” He paused, typing some more.

“Konstantin Petrov. Dude. That guy is essentially like royalty. Bad guy royalty.” Steve said as I heard him chewing on something.

“What do you mean?” I asked and he chuckled.

“Like the Russian mob. There are wrap sheets on his entire family going back generations and connected to some nasty people in history. I’m surprised they let him into the country.” He added and I got an uneasy feeling.

What was a man connected to the Bratva doing at my neighbor’s house.

“Do me a favor. Can you tell me anything about my neighbor?” I asked as I gave him her address. Surely it was a mistake. But then, the man had used her first name.

“Ohhh. Now we are getting to the juicy stuff. Katerina Volkova. By day, it says she is an heiress to a vast empire of businesses and her name is seemingly clean, though they are watching her. But her father is Dimitri Volkova, and that guy was a known Bratva kingpin.” Steve whistled at whatever he looked at on the screen.

“Your neighbor is like Bratva royalty. Her mother was from the Novikov family. Anna Novikov. She was the granddaughter of a very mean guy who was responsible for a lot of bloodshed in some in-house turf wars in Moscow. Dimitri and Anna married to form an alliance and end the bloodshed.” Steve kept eating something and I winced at the sound through the phone.
