“He had to make a choice because of me. If I hadn’t fucked up, he never would have been in that situation.” He whispered, his voice breaking.

“Perhaps. But he was involved with people who put him on numbered days anyway. Just like your brother. You can’t protect him forever. He will need to make choices for himself.” I said and he made a sound that I wasn’t sure was agreement or not.

“He doesn’t know, does he?” I asked, understanding now why he was so protective.

“No. Our father was Tommy’s hero. I couldn’t let him know that he got himself messed up in the wrong crowd and that I had gone along with it all.” He said with a sigh.

“I’ll have my people watch him if it makes you feel better. If I go to the safe house, you have to as well. Don’t think I am a fool and can’t see the infatuation you have for her.” I said and he laughed softly.

“Fine. But only because we need to figure out what to do about the man who ordered her to be taken. I have a few things to say about that to him.” He muttered and I grinned.

Yeah. The guy was well and truly smitten and when those two finally decided to get together, everyone was going to need to run for cover.

“Meet me at the Madden’s this evening,” I said and hung up.

It was a weird situation to be in, talking to another man who was in love with the same woman I was, while knowing two other men were already cozying up to her.

A woman I had longed for since I could remember. The woman I had sacrificed everything to keep safe, even though she never knew.

Hamish reminded me of Yuri in some ways. More cocky and vocal, but has the same heart.

And that was why I was so drawn to him, I realized. It was like having my best friend back and I would do anything to help him because I hadn’t done enough to help Yuri.

I dialed my contact in the force waiting for an answer.

“Alexsei. I don’t have anything on the radars.” He said softly and I smiled. He was a good guy and one of my best informants.

“I need a favor. Albert Davenport.” I said and I heard the intake of breath.

“He is a powerful man, Alexsei.” He said and I could hear the caution in his voice.

“I know. But I need to help a friend. Get me anything you can on him. Powerful men have powerful secrets. You do this, and I’ll not only consider your debt paid in full, but I will also owe you a favor.” I added, knowing that meant more than his debt.

“You really want this. Okay. Consider it done. Give your mother a kiss for me when you see her next.” He said with a chuckle.

I hung up with an eye roll. The man had been lusting after my mother since the first time he saw her bailing out my brother.

He would pull through and get me what I needed.

Now I had to figure out how to stop myself from getting killed by my family for being a traitor.

Iwatched Riley roll the dough on the floured surface, mesmerized by the movement of his hands as he pushed the dough away from his body, then dragged it forward.

“What are you making?” I asked and he smiled.

“Cinnamon rolls.” He said and I hummed happily.

Donuts were one of my favorite things in his bakery, but his cinnamon rolls were a gift from god.

“The dough needs to rise for a while.” He said as he placed it in a bowl and covered it with a tea towel.

“Feel like taking a walk with me to the lake?” He asked and I nodded, sliding off the barstool.

“Where’s Leo?” I asked and Riley placed a finger to his lips and pointed at the couch where the man in question was passed out.
