His family was ruthless and determined to gain power. If he was here looking for Katerina, he would want her alive first to legitimize the marriage before he got rid of her and I would bet money on it being him responsible for the abduction.

I glanced at my phone, seeing a missed call from Hamish.

I don’t know what it was about that man, but I liked him. He had balls and people underestimated his skills.

I also knew the weight he carried on his shoulders, not that he had admitted it to me yet. No one hid secrets from me.

I wondered how long it would be before he told Katerina, if he was planning on pursuing her the way I know he wants to, that little piece of history was going to need to come to light.

I called him back and he answered on the third ring.

“Alexsei. I need that information you said you could get on Albert. The women have started announcing a fucking date.” He snarled and I bit my tongue to stop the laughter.

“Very well. I’ll have my guy look into things for you, but I need something from you in return.” I said and he grunted.

“What? My left kidney?” He muttered and I laughed.

“Nothing so crude. I need you to look into Egor Burgov and Konstantin Petrov. I’d like to know what your contact can find on them and why they are here.” I said, knowing it was unlikely they would find anything I didn’t already know but it was worth a shot.

“I can already tell you we don’t have much, only that they are being watched for suspected connections to the Bratva and that Konstantin is a bad guy.” He said with a sigh.

“He is more than that. He is trouble and my father just made a deal with him.” I said through gritted teeth.

“What is so bad about this one guy in particular? What deal?” He added as I climbed into my car.

“Konstantin was set to be Katerina’s husband. He was the arranged marriage that we thought we had removed all those years ago.” I said, hearing the sharp intake of breath.

“Why is he here now?” He asked softly but I could tell he already put it together.

“To collect his bride and take control of this chapter of the Bratva,” I replied and he swore softly.

“He was behind it wasn’t he?” Hamish said, not really asking a question.

“He didn’t say outright but yes, I would put money on it. I have another problem.” I glanced at my phone, hoping to see the texts or a call that still hadn’t come.

“I think my contact was compromised in Moscow. Whoever White Fox is, they either know someone was looking into them or he poked into somewhere that got him killed.” I said, a little concerned.

“What does that mean for you?” Hamish asked and I grimaced.

“It depends. If he was taken alive, then it is only a matter of time before my cover is blown too. I’m on borrowed time here and my hands are tied.” I felt frustrated and angry that I couldn’t do more.

I was so close to figuring things out and finally having answers.

“I think we should go to the Maddens with this and then to the safe house and regroup. With what you know, you can’t risk being taken either. I might not be able to do it so soon.” Hamish sounded as angry and frustrated as I felt.

“Why not?” I knew Katerina would question where Hamish was if I showed up without him.

The others would too. She might be in denial, but we all saw the attraction.

“If I go, my brother will be at risk. It’s the only reason why I am going ahead with these stupid engagement plans until I find a solution.” I heard the despair beneath the words and I felt for him.

I was going to push because pushing was what I did best.

“I know about your father, Hamish,” I said softly and he went silent for a long time. I almost thought he had hung up if it wasn’t for the soft sound of his breathing.

“How?” He whispered and I shrugged, knowing he couldn’t see me.

“It doesn’t matter. What does matter is there has to come a time when you put the past behind you. You didn’t make the choice, he did.” I said.
