For the first time in a long time, I finally felt happy.

Thirty two

Alexsei

“This is the right address,” I said softly as I pulled the car onto the gravel driveway.

“I don’t know. The GPS is going all funny.” Hamish said from the passenger seat, not even looking at the GPS and scrolling through the songs on his phone as he took another bite from the pastry he insisted we needed at the gas station.

“Stop being a passenger princess and pay attention.” I snapped and he rolled his eyes.

“Look. There, see?” He pointed and I glanced at the glitching GPS.

“Fucking Hell,” I muttered when he got icing sugar on the screen.

The man was a weird combination of golden retriever and Devil in Disguise. If I hadn’t seen him in action, I never would have believed he had any balls to him at all.

“Oh wait. It’s just the road. It makes it look like we are in the woods. You’re good.” He said with a nod and held out a donut.

“Want a bite?” He asked and I stared at him.

Just stared. I had no idea how to handle him. Yuri had nothing on Hamish when it came to intensity.

“No? Come on. Here comes the airplane. Open wide. Neeeaaaaaaaawwwwwwwww.” He said with a grin, waving the fucking pastry through the air until he shoved it in my mouth.

“There’s a good boy.” He taunted me with a slap to my cheek.

My eye twitched as I looked at the road.

I was going to shoot him.

No wonder Katerina had such an intense relationship with this man. I was starting to see why she slashed his tires, a story he had told me three times now on this long ass drive.

“There’s the cabin. Wow.” Hamish said with a low whistle.

“That’s no fucking cabin. That is a lodge. Someone needs to tell Mikhail and Anatoly what an actual cabin is.” He mused and I had to agree with him.

“Looks like the lights are still off. They must be sleeping.” Hamish said as I pulled to a stop and we both got out.

“What was the code to get in the front door?” I asked as we slowly approached it, seeing the keypad.

“I don’t know. I thought he told you.” Hamish said with a side glance as he wiped his fingers on his grey sweatpants.

I was used to seeing him in business suits so when he showed up in loose sweats and a t-shirt, I was a little taken aback.

“He gave it to you,” I said and we stared at each other.

“Fuck. Okay. We will have to knock or call one of them.” I said as Hamish wandered down the side of the house.

“Nope. Look. The window here is open. Give me a boost and I’ll slip through and open the door.” He said and I groaned.

“No, you crazy fucking dog. Just call one of them or knock.” I said and he put his hands on his hips.

“Seriously? Dog? I thought we were friends. Besides, how fun would it be to slip in undetected and surprise Katerina by climbing into bed with her.” He said with a dreamy look.

“She is liable to stab you if you do that,” I muttered and Hamish laughed.

“I do like a challenge. Come on. Give me a boost.” He said and I sighed, knowing this was a stupid idea and I was even more stupid for going along with it.
