Chapter Eleven

Joshua

I'm stiff from lying in the same position, but I would never complain aloud or give this up. She slept as good as can be with the nurses coming in every two hours to check her vitals. The doctor said they needed to do it more often because of her previous readings.

Her blood pressure has been normal for the last few hours, and both hers and the baby’s heart rates are normal. They are going to do an ultrasound in a couple hours, and I'll get to see my baby. I've wanted this baby to be mine all along, and now she is. I can't believe I'm going to be a father. My phone chirps in my pocket, and I pull it out to see a text from Timothy.

Can you call? Got some information.

Give me 10. I type back a quick reply.

I start to sit up, but Ana grabs onto my shirt tighter. I love how she knows I'm moving away, as if she can't stand for me to be away from her. Every time I moved during the night, she would grip my shirt. There's no going back for me now, she's mine like I told her last night.

“Angel, baby, I need to call Timothy. I'm going to step in the hall and have Ian come in, okay?” I whisper to her.

“Okay, honey,” she says her voice groggy with sleep.

The sound of her calling me honey is music to my ears. It's the dream I've wanted for a long time.

“I'm also going to find me some coffee. I'll be back before the technicians get here. Do you want me to ask the nurses to bring you some breakfast?” She nods in response. I get up and lean down and kiss her forehead before walking to the door.

“Ian, can you come in and sit with Ana until I get done talking to Timothy? If the techs beat me back, text me, I want to be here for the ultrasound,” I tell him.

“Sure, boss.” He stretches from the chair a nurse must have given him during the night.

I proceed down the hall but stop at the nurses’ desk to inform them I'm heading for coffee, and then walk to the stairwell. Taking the stairs will get rid of the stiffness. I pull up Timothy's number in my contacts and place the call.

“What's up, Timothy?”

“Ana's solicitor called, Jonathan's counsel called them this morning. They’re now countersuing on the grounds of adultery and state that Ana must be present in court to confirm the paternity of the child.”

“No. With this blood pressure scare, she's not going anywhere near a courtroom.”

“That's what I thought you'd say. I'll tell them due to complications with her pregnancy she can't travel. Next, I was doing a hack into Jonathan's office trying to get his phone records. He contacted a foreign number registered to a Smith Enterprises. After an initial look, it appears to be a front. I'll do more digging. He also received a call on his cell that was untraceable. Also, surveillance picked up Lawrence Baker and Stephan Landers meeting with Jonathan this morning. A third guy showed up right before I called you. This new guy avoids all the cameras as if he knows we're watching. Based on his movements, I would say mercenary. Finally, Bradley Cranston called for you at the main headquarters number, he said you’re old friends, and he heard about you taking over the company. He would be interested in doing some work for you. Like you could ever forget that wanker. I had to ping quite a few towers to avoid someone catching our location. They are definitely still looking.”

“Wow, Timothy, that's the most I've heard you talk and it not all be technical. As for this Mr. Smith, be careful, but do the research. Lawrence and Stephan, I'll talk to Maya and Duncan about. The merc, keep an eye on. Hold on Brad. I don't like him coming to us, it could be a setup. You’re right, I won’t ever forget the man that allowed my mum to be kidnapped by Nathan. Plus he and Michael don't get along if I remember Michael’s last words to him, something about cutting off his balls and spoon feeding them to him. I don’t trust him. Thank you.”

“How're your girls doing this morning?” he asks warmly.

“Pretty good. I'm hoping they can come home today. I need to run, the techs are doing an ultrasound to check on little Isabella. I can't wait to see her.” I feel the joy in my voice at that statement.

“Spoken like a proud papa. Congrats, mate, I'm happy for you both, and excellent idea.”

“Thanks, Timothy. Talk to you later.” I hang up and head back upstairs to my girls, coffee in hand.

My girls. I'll never get tired of saying that. I smile to myself as I walk past the nurses’ station again. Looking at their board, I see the name and stop. Dr. J. Parker, but in parenthesis is the name Jen.

My mind flashes back. No way. It can't be. Right profession, wrong country. Wrong woman. I look back at the chair outside Ana's room and think, what if. What a cluster fuck this would be. I shake off the feeling and know I'm grasping at straws as I enter the room to my girls.

Ana is sitting up in the bed, a tray of breakfast items is left uneaten next to her. Her cup of tea half empty. She smiles at me as she turns from talking with Ian. My heart starts pounding hard, I love that smile. Shit, I think I love this woman.

“Hey, Angel, did you miss me?”

“Yes, honey. The tech is on their way, they decided to squeeze us in early.” I walk to the bed and kiss her gently on the lips, her heart monitor starts beeping.

“Gave you away again.” I smile at her.

“I can't wait until I'm off that, so it won't be tattling on me,” she exclaims as she points at the heart monitor on the wall.
