Who am I kidding?

He’s the sexiest man in existence, and I’d pay good money to watch him chop firewood or fix something right now.

Can we get a flat tire over here?

Hell, I’d settle for watching him open a jar at the moment.

We ride home in silence while I contemplate whether Blake is really a Legolas or actually an Aragorn—for the record, I’m fine with either—and that spicy tension returns, lingering between us when his hand slides over to cradle my belly. I find it odd that he parks his truck in the front instead of pulling into the garage as usual, but I keep my thoughts to myself while he helps me out.

“Can I walk you to your door?” he asks as he leads me into the house.

I laugh, still confused, but he sets our book haul down in the living room and follows me to the guest bedroom. I stare at him curiously as he glances up at me with his hands in his pockets.

“I had a really nice time tonight, Lo.”

“So did I,” I reply cautiously.

“And I’d really like to take you out again sometime soon, if it’s not too forward of me to ask.”

I snort and cross my arms as I lean back against the wall. “You mean, you’re not interested in coming in?” I say sarcastically and gesture to my bedroom door.

He shakes his head slowly and blows out a breath. “Wow, I mean, as much as I’d love that, and I mean, really, reallylove that, I feel like we should take things slow, don’t you?”

I narrow my eyes at him. “What are you playing at, Gus-Gus?”

He steps forward, stretching his arms over my head and staring down at me in a way that leaves me breathless. “Just trying to convince my girl to give me a goodnight kiss.”

My eyebrows shoot up. “Your girl?”

He’s doing it again—the kind of crap that makes me roll my eyes when I read it in a romance novel. Except it makes me weak in the knees when Blake aims it my way.

“You heard me,” he whispers. Then he leans in, rubbing the tip of his nose against mine. “So, how about that kiss?”

My eyes flutter closed as I tilt my chin up instinctively. “I suppose I do owe you for the books,” I mumble, and our lips meet a second later.

But this instantly feels different. It’s not a ground-rules sanctioned kiss, it’s not a middle-of-the-night accident, and it’s not forced PDA. This is arealkiss.

His mouth parts, and he slowly slips his tongue between my lips. I clutch at his sides, then my fingers hook his belt loops and I pull him closer, arching my back up from the wall to meet him. He moans and deepens the kiss again as one of his hands curls around the back of my neck, and my head is absolutely swimming. I can’t think of anything but Blake right now, how good he is at this, how totally and completely gone I am for him, how I don’t care about the consequences when he’s kissing me this way, how badly I want this to go on forever.

I’m just about to climb him like a tree when he pulls away abruptly, untangling his hand from my hair as his chest heaves over me. “Okay, then,” he begins, swallowing hard. “Goodnight, Agnes.” He leans down once more to kiss my forehead before he pushes himself away from the wall. Then I watch as he saunters down the hall to his own bedroom, closing the door behind him.

“What the actual heck?” I mutter aloud, and I think I hear him chuckling from his room.

I pull out my phone as soon as I turn and dart into my room, ready to send him an angry text or at least demand an explanation. But he beats me to the punch.

Gus-Gus

I know I’m supposed to wait longer before I call, but when can I see you again?

Loren

Leave me alone.

Gus-Gus

Stop pretending you didn’t enjoy that kiss almost as much as I did, Agnes, or I’ll be forced to do it again just to prove my point.

And next time, I won’t be holding back.
