No. Maybe we should try it again for a little longer.

Ugh, shut up, stupid subconscious.

“Yeah, thanks,” I whisper.

“Come on, let’s go check out our little sweet pea,” he says, but then he freezes as he turns, and his expression changes. “Well, shit.”

“What?” I ask as I twist in my seat to find Tenley standing in front of the truck. Her eyes are wide, but her lips form a knowing smile, and her hands are planted firmly on her hips. “Oh. Fudge.”

Then she puckers her lips to mime a kiss, winks, and turns to walk inside.

“I thought you said she wasn’t going to be here today,” he whines.

“She wasn’t supposed to be. I made sure to book my appointment on the same day she told me she’d scheduled herself to see a different doctor.” I hesitate before admitting the next part. “But she already knows.”

He rears back. “You told Tenley?”

“I’m sorry,” I cringe. “She figured it out the other day. But she doesn’t know about our arrangement, and I made her promise not to tell?—”

“JD knows too,” he blurts out. “I told him this morning. I’m sorry, I couldn’t hold it in any longer.”

“I can only imagine what he had to say,” I reply, secretly relieved. “Although the amount of times I’ve vomited in class over the past month or so may have been a clue.”

He chuckles. “Yeah, he mentioned that. He’s pretty excited though.”

“So is Tenley,” I admit. “Not nearly as judgmental as I figured, either.”

“Same.”

“Okay, so this is good, right? Now that they know, we just have to tell my family.” I bite my lip and wring my hands. For some reason, seeing Tenley here is making this all too real.

“Hey,” he catches my attention before I begin hyperventilating. “Don’t worry. We’ll tell them together, all right?”

I nod too quickly, but he holds my gaze until I’m feeling calmer.

“Don’t make me kiss you again, Reed. I can’t make any promises about holding back this time.”

I laugh shortly as my face heats up. All I’d need is for him to lose a little of his self-control to completely give up on mine. But he gestures toward the door with his head instead of making a move.

“Thanks. I’m ready,” I tell him.

He flashes another smile at me before he walks around the truck and opens my door, then we go inside to check in. I don’t see any more signs of Tenley, except for her name on the actual signs, of course.

Blake takes a seat beside me in the large waiting room, and I glance up from my paperwork to see him fidgeting uncomfortably when a well-dressed woman greets him. She’s a pharmaceutical rep, judging by the logo on her nametag, and beautiful enough to elicit a trace of jealousy on my part. I expect a more flirtatious response from him, but all he offers her is a polite nod. I smirk at the way he blushes and tries to fasten an extra button on his shirt, as if it’ll make him look any less sexy.

“Friend of yours?” I ask, stifling my amusement.

He clears his throat and frowns. I lean over and nudge his shoulder with mine so he can see I’m kidding, and he exhales in relief. And I can’t help but feel a little satisfied by his nerves, especially after our conversation in the truck.

“Loren? Loren Reed?”

I rise as one of the medical assistants calls my name, and Blake follows. “Hi, I’m Mackenzie, and I’ll be getting your vitals today.” She holds the door open, her eyes following Blake as he shadows me. “And who do we have here? Dare I say a Bourgeois?”

“Blake,” he returns, forcing another uncharacteristically awkward smile.

“Nurse Tenley’s brother-in-law Blake?”

He cringes as he nods.
