Ugh.

Proud-daddy Blake is entirely too adorable. I force myself to look away.

“Have you told your brother yet?” Tenley asks.

“Yes,” he says with a sigh. “I confessed this morning. He got all mushy and gross.”

“Of course he did.” Tenley rolls her eyes. Then she rubs her hands together before reaching over to grab a pair of medical gloves. “Okay, let’s get this party started, shall we?”

“Hold on, you can’t, like, behermidwife, can you? Wouldn’t that be unethical? Or just plain weird?” Blake wrinkles his nose in disgust.

Tenley shrugs. “Not for me. But if you’re uncomfortable, Loren, you can reschedule with Doc Simms. No hard feelings.”

“I only asked for Dr. Simms because I didn’t want it to be awkward for you or Blake,” I tell her. “I actually think it would be cool if you got to deliver the baby later. That is, if you’re still working by then.”

Blake frowns. “We hadn’t exactly discussed that. But I suppose it isyourchoice.”

I ignore the tension in his voice. “Let’s just go ahead with it today. We’re already here, right?”

“Right.” He sniffs.

“Okay. Party’s back on,” Tenley announces, slipping on the gloves. Then she grabs the exact tool that Blake and I have been eyeballing, and I hear him gulp audibly. “You might feel a teensy bit of pressure,” she warns me as she directs me to lie back.

“Oh, hell. You’re really gonna—wow. Okay.” Blake looks horrified as Tenley squirts some type of gel over the tip.

She smirks at him before spreading a drape over my knees. “Don’t feel intimidated, bro. It might seem big, but personally, I find it to be a pretty accurate representation of what I’m used to working with. You know, as far as transvaginal ultrasound devices go.”

He scoffs and turns to me. “What did I say before? A few months around JD, and she’s worse than me.”

“Never would have taken you for a prude, Blake,” she says with fake innocence, staring him down again and making him roll his eyes. Then she waits for my cue before she begins the sonogram.

“Doing okay?” she whispers when I inhale sharply, her tone more serious this time.

I nod, figuring this is just the first on a long list of unpleasant situations brought on by that second pink line.

“Let’s see who we have here,” she mumbles, shifting the instrument and scrolling around on the monitor. Then she stops abruptly, her expression changing. Her jaw flops open, and she shakes her head slightly in disbelief.

“Holy shit.”

“Ten, is everything okay?” Blake asks.

“Oh yeah, it’s great,” she says, coming back from her trance. “Better than great, actually.” She stops and smiles at us, then an incredulous laugh bubbles out of her before she faces the screen again.

“Wanna explain what’s going on, then?” he demands.

“Okay. You asked for it. But I think you’re just trying to one-up your brother now,” she mutters. She turns the monitor to face us and clears her throat before she speaks. “Here’s your baby, guys.” She stops moving again and points to a wiggly oval with a flickering light inside, and my eyes immediately begin stinging.

I continue staring at the small, quivering spot as the screen freezes and “BABY A” appears above it. Tenley bites her lip, repeating the same process with a different figure, typing “BABY B” this time.

My chest tightens as I stare at the letter “B” on the screen. A + B = twins, doesn’t it?

There’s no way.

It’s not even possible.

Women like me don’t hook up with men who look like Blake and get pregnant with twins. They just adopt a couple of cats, right?

Tenley turns her eyes to meet Blake’s. “And here’s yourotherbaby. Still overachievers, I guess.”
