A smile flickers across his face before the realization hits him. “T-t-two babies?” he stutters, blinking at the screen. If I weren’t so busy trying to keep myself alive right now, I’d be enjoying his reaction, because I’ve certainly never seen him this rattled.

Tenley nods softly. “Two babies.”

“It can’t be, can it?” I rasp, feeling like my heart is stuck in my throat.

“Most definitely. It also explains the high hCG levels. It’s still a little early to tell, but from the looks of things, I’m calling them monochorionic-diamniotic.”

“What does that mean?” I ask.

“They share one placenta but have their own amniotic sacs.”

“Tenley,” Blake growls.

She smirks. “Sorry, all signs point toward identical twins. Would you like to hear their heartbeats?”

He exhales loudly, holding his forehead up as if his neck can no longer handle the job. “Two heartbeats?” His voice is coming out in a wheeze now.

“Yep. Listen.” She clicks a button, and a loud sound that reminds me of an old washing machine blares from the speakers. There are two distinct rhythms, one growing louder than the other as she shifts around.

My mind is reeling as I take it all in, and I can’t decide whether to focus on the screen or on Blake’s face. Well, technically, I can’t see much of anything with the way I’ve started crying.

“Hey, Dad? This would be a good time to pull out your phone,” Tenley suggests, and he sighs as he records a first look at our babies, squeezing my hand with his other the entire time.

Blake stares down at me, his eyes glistening and admiration clear in all of his features, and I don’t know how I manage to take the next breath.

“We madetwobabies, Lo.”

“We did,” I reply as tears continue spilling over.

“Now do you believe me when I say you’re amazing?”

I laugh through a sob. “Yeah, maybe I am.”

Then he leans down and kisses me softly, making me feel like the most special human on the planet. That is, until he pulls away, and I hear the FaceTime ring on his phone.

JD’s voice is loud and clear as he answers. “Hey, what’s going on? Everything okay?”

“I’m winning, bro. That’s what’s happening.” Blake turns the phone so Tenley and I are in the shot, despite her hand still resting under the tent over my legs.

“Blake, I’m not sure this is?—”

“Oh, hey, Loren!” I hear JD say.

“Hey, JD,” I return on a sigh.

“Tell him what you just told us, Ten. Show him,” Blake urges. And I groan to myself because I can’t handle adorable, proud-daddy Blake again.

“He’s right, babe,” Tenley admits, trying to downplay her amusement. “While the rest of us have been playing it safe and kicking extra points, Coach Blake is out here going for two-point conversions.” She turns the screen and points to both babies, and JD lets out an uncharacteristic string of profanities, making me giggle. Then the screen gets blurry, and the babies flutter around even more.

“And what do you have to say for yourself, Ms. Reed?” JD calls out, and Blake brings the phone closer to my face.

I smirk. “Well, boss, I’m gonna need you to sign off on my maternity leave paperwork when you get a chance.”
