He presses his lips together in a tight smile, his eyes darting over to mine as he says something to her, and she nods in response. The song continues even though he drops his hands and steps back, and there’s an awkward pause before the emcee gets the hint and calls for one more round of applause. Blake waves shyly and stuffs his hands in his pockets before he ambles over to meet me at the table.
His friends offer their congratulations, but he ignores them as he plops down in a chair and looks up at me, as if he’s awaiting my approval. He snakes an arm around my waist and pulls me into his lap.
I can feel their eyes on us, but with him staring at me like this, it’s hard to think of anything else. He leans up at the same time his hand slides over my lower back and his fingers press into my bare skin, urging me forward.
I know what he wants.
“Congratulations, your grace,” I say, adjusting his crown as his gaze lands on my mouth. He doesn’t reply, but I see his throat working as he swallows hard. Even the air between us is pulling me in.
I bring my lips to his cheek, intending to reinforce our fake relationship with a chaste kiss for the audience. But I accidentally linger after I realize how good his skin feels and how delicious he smells from here. It takes all I have not to move down to his neck.
He lets out a contented hum as my cheek brushes his, his fingertips digging into my back while his other hand fists the skirt of my dress. “Don’t stop,” he whispers, just low enough so that I’m the only one who can hear him, and I shiver.
Then he turns his face and presses his lips to mine, and we both settle into the kiss as if it’s a relief to get to this point. He doesn’t push me, only waits patiently for me to decide how far I want this to go.
The problem is I could do this all night.
I bring my hand up to his jaw as I tilt my head and slip my tongue inside his mouth, and he groans. And, oh man, does it take all of my willpower not to wrap my arms around his neck and ask him to take me upstairs to finish this off.
But we can’t. Because that’s not how it’s going to go for Blake and me.
In the meantime, his velvet tongue brushes over mine, and I nearly moan in front of all these people. Why does he have to be so damned good at this?
I vaguely hear a throat clearing at the same time Blake reluctantly pulls away. But his eyes are trained on mine as we part.
“Yes, congrats, Blake,” Jada says in an amused tone.
“Thanks,” he returns without looking away.
I bite my lip as I attempt to slow my breathing. But the way Blake is staring at me as if I’m the only woman in the world isn’t helping.
“Dance with me one more time?” he asks. And I nod, because it’s the only thing I can manage.
I shift in his lap, preparing myself to stand, and a growl rumbles in his chest. He smirks at me, and his eyebrows twitch in a silent message.
Do you see what you do to me?
I’m still in awe of my ability to turn him on. Me? Plain, old Loren? He really wantsme?
He leads me forward, bringing my hand up to his mouth for a kiss as we approach the dance floor. Then his eyes lock onto mine again as he leans down and wraps his arms around me, and I clasp my hands behind his neck, the way we fit together seeming so natural.
“Gah, Lo,” he says after a while, shaking his head softly. “I’m afraid I’ve made a huge mistake.”
“What do you mean?”
He furrows his brow. “I shouldn’t have taken you here with me tonight.”
I frown as my stomach dips. “Oh.”
“I’m never going to survive this,” he adds, shaking his head again. “I’m trying so hard to control myself, to remember that this isn’t supposed to be real, but you just …” He squeezes his eyes closed. “You undo me, Loren.”
Iundohim?
He’s got to be freaking kidding me right now.
I exhale, trying to collect my bearings. I’m sure it’s another one of his lines. This is Blake Bourgeois, after all.
“I know you don’t want to hear this kind of stuff from me, but I’m so bad at pretending I don’t want you,” he continues, making my belly swoop again.
