I shrug. “Um, should we? Are you guys having one of those?” I ask Tenley.

“Eh, it’s not my style,” she says. “We’ll do a baby shower later on, so JD can still get his moment,” she adds in a joking tone.

I glance back at Loren to find her wide, pleading eyes staring back at me. She basically looks like one of those cartoon puppies, and I’ve never seen anything more adorable. “Whatever you want, babe, I’m good for it,” I tell her with a wink. As if I could deny her.

She actually squeals, and Tenley laughs as she moves the wand over her stomach again.

“All right, you guys. This is Baby B,” Tenley begins, pointing to the monitor screen. “My neh … my neeh ...”

She drags the sound out, and Loren sits up in bed and crushes my hand in anticipation.

“My beautiful niece.”

Loren gasps and covers her mouth with her free hand. “Girls?” she squeaks.

Tenley nods and grins. “Here’s her sister, Little Miss Baby A. And I was almost certain they’d be boys, what with the timing of the conception date in correlation to peak ovulation. Another unlikely coincidence or small miracle, I’d say.”

“Are we really having two baby girls?” she asks Tenley meekly.

“Yep. Congratulations to both of you. Hope you don’t mind the color pink.”

Loren turns to me with tears streaming down her face, and I’m fighting back the urge to join her. “Blake?”

“I don’t hate it. After all, they say I’m pretty good with women,” I say with a flirty smirk.

“I’d fuss you for that, but the truth is, I don’t know what I’d have done with a pair of boys,” Loren replies.

“I’m sure you’d have made a great football mom. But this is probably for the best.”

“You can always give it another go later,” Tenley mumbles, smirking to herself.

Loren rolls her eyes. “Very funny.”

Truthfully, I haven’t even considered having more kids before now. It’s hard to wrap my mind around the idea when I haven’t gotten to see what life with two babies is like yet. But what I do note is the way I automatically picture Loren as the mother of any additional children, as if my subconscious is already making plans.

“Just putting it out there, but I’m more than willing to take one for the team if you ever change your mind. Even if you just need the practice,” I lean in and whisper beside her ear.

She turns her lips to the side and suppresses a smile. “I’m sure I’ll be satisfied after this round.”

“I can make sure of that, too.”

Tenley snorts without looking away from the screen. “The rizz on this kid,” she mutters under her breath, darting her eyes over to let me know she’s disappointed in me for wasting her setup.

I frown at her. My lines can’t actually be worse than JD’s, can they?

“Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, let’s get you set up in a room,” Tenley announces.

“A room?” Loren pouts.

“I’m keeping you in tonight for observation,” Tenley declares, eliciting a whimper from Loren. “Everything is most likely fine, but I’d rather keep you on a monitor overnight to make sure the babies are still comfy.”

“Do I have to?”

“Yep,” Tenley responds without hesitation. She begins shifting the rails on Loren’s bed and preparing to wheel her away again. “I’m also going to send you to a maternal-fetal-medicine specialist as soon as possible. They have better equipment and more experience with multiples than I do, and I’d rather be safe than sorry.”

Loren’s frown deepens, but I grab her hand again. “I’ll take you, okay?” I assure her, and she nods.

“So, when can I bust her outta here?” I ask Tenley, following them down the hall and into a regular room.
