Martin wasn’t expecting that. “My dear,” he drawled, pouring on the charm.

I felt sick as his entire expression changed from menacing to creepy obsession as if a switch had been thrown.

“Martin.” I stopped less than a foot away from him and narrowed my eyes.

He ran his gaze over me and licked his lips. “You look absolutely delectable. It’s been a long time.”

“Seventeen years.”

“That long?” One of his dark brows rose. “You don’t look any older.”

“Maybe not. But I’m a shit-ton wiser than when you fucked up my life.”

“Are you really? I find that interesting.”

“Don’t care what you think,” I said through clenched teeth. “Not here to reminisce about the past, either.”

“Then why are you here after all this time, my dear?” Palms up, he spread apart his hands. “Speak. I’m all ears.”

“I’m here with my niece to collect Kyle.” I planted my hands on my hips. “And to warn you to stay the fuck out of his life and all our lives from now on.”

“Well, I’m very sorry, my dear.” Both his brows rose. “But you can’t have Kyle. He belongs to me. And as for the rest, you’re in no position to bargain with me.”

“I disagree.” I lifted my chin.

The room went silent, the tension thick.

I’d risked a lot coming here. We all had. For love. Just like when I’d been pregnant with Ella, I knew it then, and I knew it more certainly now.

Love was worth every risk.

“Be that as it may, you should be more cautious how you speak.” Martin glanced at his nephew. “Kyle is in such a fragile state.”

“We see that, asshole.” Tommy’s arms were straight at his sides, his hands opening and closing. He seemed to be having difficulty keeping it together.

Kyle certainly was with Claire, and everyone we both cared about were in Martin’s clutches.

“I wasn’t referring to the current state of his injuries.” Martin looked down his nose at Tommy. When he took in Barry, his eyes widened just a bit. But then his gaze turned calculating and cold.

To Martin Skellin, everyone—even a beast of a man—was a bug to be crushed. He might believe so. He might have the power in this situation, but he had no one who cared about him here, and so he held no power that mattered.

Martin sneered at Barry. “Your son is rash, and likely to grow up to be nothing but a disappointment, just like his father.”

Missy tossed a lock of her black hair over her shoulder. “At least the Evanses have a legitimate business.”

His dark eyes flaring once more, Martin glared at her. Under his scrutiny, Missy turned pale.

I moved in front of Martin, throwing out one arm. “Enough. This is a waste of time. Everyone here, including your men, know you’re an evil, sadistic asshole.”

I kept my focus on him, even though I could feel Kyle watching, his interest keen. But I got the idea he knew it was unwise to divide one’s attention around a man like his uncle.

“We’re leaving with Kyle,” I said.

Kyle nodded. “I’m leaving with my friends, and my girlfriend. I’m not working for you anymore.”

“You don’t have any say in that.” Martin’s lips curled. “You chose your path. I own your ass.”

No longer appearing afraid, Kyle looked down his nose at Martin. “I think I do, given our previous discussion.”
