Oh, are you a warrior?

I bit my lip.Shit, am I flirting with this guy?Is he some sort of army brat?

Ric

Yes. It’s a tradition in my family.

Me

What service?

Three dots. I pursed my lips. Most men who were in the service loved to brag about what they did. Or at least the ones I had met before. Maybe I was meeting duds. My entire dating life was a dud.

Ric

What if I told you it was top secret?

Me

I would call bullshit on that.

Ric

That was years ago. I’m a free agent now. I trained to fly with the army.

Me

Like planes?

Ric

Kind of like planes. Yeah. Fighters and stuff like that.

Me

Maybe I have some sort of Top Gun fantasy.

“Fuck,” I muttered. I threw my phone on my pillow like it was a hot potato. Why am I flirting with him like this? I really need to get laid. My shoulders slumped as I sighed. I missed Andy. We could have had a girls’ night and gone to the bar. She was always good at finding the perfect guy for me when we went out. Andy wasn’t interested in anyone, but she would always point me to the best choices. Did I always listen to her? No. And those always ended horribly. Either he was a selfish lover or mean as a snake. I always felt like she had some innate magic. I mean, she always called it her gut. Sometimes it seemed likemorethan intuition.

When she disappeared, I was worried. I called the cops. They never found out what happened to her. It was suspicious. Like a miracle, she video called me after a few days. The evasive conversations with her were . . . off. I didn’t like it. After she called me, I followed every directive she told me. She wasn’t coming back and told me I could stay in her house. She asked that I delete and hide any photos of her mother and avoid her mother’s old room, and I did. Her gut instincts were strong. I trusted her. She hated when I teased her about being psychic. Sometimes I told her she was an empath. She disagreed vehemently on all of that. All I knew was if she told me to jump, I would have. I had that much faith in her.

I pulled my phone out. He had replied, but I ignored it. I opened mynewchat with Andy’s new number.Who is Ric? He says he knows you.

A few moments passed. My phone vibrated. She replied,Ric is a good guy. I dunno why he’s texting you, though. Ore has been teasing him about it.

I reopened the chat with Ric.

Ric

I haven’t watched that. I will have to watch that. I will search for a copy.

Me

You haven’t watched Top Gun? I mean, I haven’t seen the new one. But like it’s kind of a classic.

Ric

I grew up sheltered. I bet you haven’t heard of the movies I have seen.
