He pulled her back and turned her around. “We cannot help. She’s stuck. Like you’re stuck. If we took her now, she would die. She’s already being tortured, as it is.”

She glared at him. “I enjoy being stuck with you!”

“Nadine, you have to understand; she can’t leave. If I get too close, we’ll have a rampage.”

“I don’t understand what you’re saying! Did you just say mate like as in the alien books?” I asked.

Nadine’s mouth fell open. She looked back at her boyfriend’s belt. “Shit. Are you dating a . . . human?”

“Of course? Are you calling me a furry or something?”

She pulled her phone out. “New plan! Let’s exchange numbers. If you need anyone to talk to, I am just a few hours away, or quicker.” She shot a death glare at her companion. His face was impassive. “In case you need help.”

“We can’t help her.”

Something trickled into my brain suddenly. It was the way he called me human. “Someone called me human a month ago, like you just did. Kinda creeped me out. They seemed almost alien.” I made a motion over my eyes as I remembered the vertical eyelids of the one man. I had tried to push it out of my head the last few weeks.

She paused, but his face changed. “What?”

“They were looking for my best friend and asking about her dead mom. They kept calling her Lady Heather, except I don’t think Heather was ever knighted like that. She died before that scam with the land plots happened.”

His head tilted. “You’ve met aliens?”

“I don’t know. They gave me the creeps and kept calling me human. It was really weird. I talked to my friend afterwards, and we stayed on the line together for a few hours til I felt okay again.”

Nadine turned to her companion as he was furiously looking at his phone. “What’s going on?”

“This is bad. There are lots of bad things happening right now. I didn’t notice because I’ve been too enmeshed with you.”

Nadine huffed as she crossed her arms across her chest. “You make it sound like I’m the bad one.”

“Are you trying to say aliens are real?”

He looked back at me and pursed his lips. “Yeah.”

“I can’t wait to tell Andy! She won’t believe me even though Heather always believed they were real.”

Nadine started waving her arms. “You can’t tell others! They’ll . . .” her eyes flickered toward her companion. “They’ll try to do bad things. Secret. Shhh!”

Another lie. I sighed. “But she would be so excited.”

“You mentioned Heather. Did she look like this?”

He flashed his phone to me. I wasn’t sure about the tech. It was like Ric’s. The image on his phone was Heather, Andy’s mom. Except she was young. Much younger. And happy. I’m not saying that she was depressed, but every time I saw her, it was like a lingering wave of sadness followed her. “Yeah, that’s her. How do you know her?”

His eyes widened as he turned back to Nadine. “We got to go. We’ve got to go home now.”

“We have four more days booked here! I wanted to explore!”

“It’s not safe here, and I have to protect you.”

She frowned, but looked back at me. “Sorry. I hope you have a good hike. Text me if those weird guys come back or if you need help.” She winked. What sort of help was she hinting at?

“We can’t help her. There’s a chance she’s in danger, but her mate will help.”

“What are you talking about? Mate? I don’t have one.”

“You reek of morynth.” He pointed to his phone. “You have little time. So you better get on with that.”
