By the way, I hacked into Chloe’s watch. Her vitals are similar to a morynth under the mating pheromones. Give her your knot.

As I leaned against the doorway waiting for Chloe, I responded,do you know anything about human physiology?

Computer

I’m hooked up to the Earth's internet. Yeah, I do.

Me

Have you considered that this is normal for humans?

Computer

You’re going to torture her to death if you don’t give her your knot. I’m shocked she’s still functioning.

Steps echoed against the stairs, and I looked up. Chloe flashed me a tight smile as she waved to me. There were dark circles underneath her eyes. “Hey there,” she mumbled.

“Morning.”

“Ready?”

“Yes. Are you feeling well?”

She tilted her head as she rushed past me. “Fine. Fine. Fine. I’m expecting a package tomorrow. Don’t open it.”

As I slid into her car, her face was dark red. “Are you okay?”

“It’s just private. It’s about . . . that thing that you’ve been helping me with.”

“Oh. Is this normal for you?”

Chloe shook her head, and her throat bobbed for a second. “I’ve always been sexual. You know it. I’ve told you some about my conquests. It’s just . . . it’s different this time.”

My phone beeped. The screen lit up:

MATE.

I rolled my eyes. I really needed to check the codes for this computer. Should I tell Chloe that the ship hacked into her personal information?

“It could just be hormones, though. Maybe.” She worried her bottom lip as she stared out the car. “There’s just been so many things that have happened in my life since I met Andy. Now she’s gallivanting off with some strange mafia dude.”

“Mate. They’re married.”

She hit the brakes as we rolled to a stop sign. She turned her body toward me. “What? She’s married and didn’t tell me?”

I groaned. Humans don’t have mating bonds. “It’s complicated.”

Chloe turned back to the wheel. “More lies,” she muttered. Her eyes were extra shiny as she blinked rapidly. A car honked behind us and she drove again. “I didn’t even get to go to the wedding? She’s never mentioned it.”

“No wedding. It’s complicated. But they are . . . together for eternity now. It’s like spiritual soul mates?”

“That makes no sense. But things have always been weird with her mom and her. I mean, I know Andy is like an empath. I get that. But it’s . . . things are just weird. Always weird. Her mom was big into aliens. That’s why I was so excited about working at the lab. Her mom would have been excited, too.”

After talking to the doctor, I knew that wasn’t true. The doctor wanted to dissect an alien. The Lady wanted to go back to space. As far as I knew, she stayed on Earth to protect the princess. “Okay.”

“It’s like it’s gotten worse since Andy left. The circumstances are so bizarre. Those guys coming around the house, and now these feelings . . .” She turned the car into the parking lot. “I don’t think Andy’s empath abilities are contagious. I’ve never been told I was an empath. And these aren’t feelings that . . . are normal.”
