“Yeah, we’re friends, right?”

“Yes, wearefriends, Chloe,” he grumbled.

I bit my lip, thankful that I hadn’t put my lipstick on yet. I picked up my lipstick and flashed a smile at the video call. “What are your plans, other than your science experiment?”

He sighed. “I am not sure. The Captain and Andy have been having discussions about a new mission.”

“Are y’all the bad guys? You always avoid telling me what you do.”

He paused. His head dipped low and his hair fell over his face. Ric’s lips pursed as he moved his tool around the gizmo. “I pilot. There were some bad guys after Andy. That’s why they are discussing . . . sending me off to gather information.”

“You aren’t like in the mafia, right? Cause I think I would have to hunt you down and save Andy myself.”

His laughter filled the bathroom. I finished painting my lips and smiled. He was smiling back at me. “I don’t think you could get to her even if you tried,” he said. “Security has tightened around here. I personally hate it.”

“You don’t like the extra safety?”

“I don’t trustthem, that’s all. But it’s why they want to send me on this mission. My skills are invaluable in this case.”

“Well, don’t get hurt.”

“It’s not been decided yet.”

I shrugged. “Still. Same difference.”

“You have a date.”

“Yes, I do have a date.”

“Be safe.” He sounded somber with those words.

I paused. “What about you?”

“I’ll be here. Don’t worry about me, sweet Chloe. I will message you later; I have to leave my quarters.”

“Bye, Ric,” I said as I tapped the end call button.

Chapter 2

Ricon

“Ricon, I need to see you in my ready room,” Chex said.

I stood up as one of the other pilots took my spot. I passed the Imperial guards as we went to the ready room. Andy was curled up in a chair by Chex’s desk. Orequin sashayed into the room behind us.

She pursed her lips as she glanced my way. “Ricon,” she said.

“Ore.”

Her eye twitched. “You know I hate that.”

I shrugged. We had tried to date when we first started working together. It didn’t work out. Ever since, things were tense whenever Orequin and I were together. Unfortunately, because of our positions, that was often. Chex was sitting behind his desk pulling up some information on his wall screens.

“According to these posts,” Chex waved toward the anonymous posts from the black market forums. “They have identified quite a few halflings on Earth right now. Orequin has figured out who holds the information. Andy was telling me you were crafting a camouflage device.”

“Yeah, I think I just finished it this morning,” I said.

“I thought that with your skills, you could go in there and get the information. After that, we will send the info to the Emperor.”
