“What happened during his capture?”

“He would never tell me. He was gone the whole day. My family thought he had left us and then he reappeared. They said he had been confused—crazed.”

“I guess you’ll have to fix one of those ships to see. What about any sort of materials inside the computer?”

“Haven’t hacked in there yet. We’re trying to start them.”

The two continued to plot the ways they could cannibalize the ships for nefarious purposes for Earth wars and spying on their own people. Why did Dr. Mahma bring me? I wasn’t sure.

“What happens if we find an alien?”

“We keep them for science, of course. We have to make sure they won’t hurt us.”

Frax.I really needed to leave this planet, but that meant leaving Chloe. Whenever I had thought about leaving, thoughts of Chloe then consumed me. She wasn’t my mate though. She couldn’t be. The mating response is activated biochemically. I liked Chloe before I met her. Before her scent wrapped around me and her hands touched my skin. No. No way was she my mate.

But if she wasn’t my mate, where would she fit in my life?

Chapter 38

Chloe

Stepping out of the copy room, the familiar voices echoed down the hallway. “He’s gone. We should eliminate the bitch and get our ship.”

“Do you have the meds that will—” Tymla’s voice echoed.

With a quick pivot, I faced the lab, snatched the keycard to the interior lab, and swiftly swiped it before bolting down the corridor. I didn’t know what they would do to me, but I knew from the time they came to the house that their vibes weren’t right. I would just hide here til Ricon got back, then scurry back to my desk. I also needed to make sure that I consume nothing that may have been left out. They mentioned poisoning me earlier. After a few minutes, I came upon what looked like a hangar with two ships straight out ofStar Trek.

I walked near one and the lights lit up. I jumped back. “Greetings, morynth mate,” the ship said.

“What?” I asked the computer.

“My biometric data says that you are a morynth mate.”

“You mean I’m Ricon’s mate?”

“I do not know who Ricon is.”

The side door was already open so I stepped inside. My fingers tightened on my phone and I realized maybe I could ask Ricon’s ship about this. I texted Pixa.

Me

I’m standing on an alien ship. Are all ships like you?

PIXA

No, does your phone have wireless charging? I think I can link with the ship if you follow my directions.

Me

Yes.

PIXA

Okay. If it’s like a basic morynth ship, walk to your right. By the consoles, you will see a handprint sensor. Put your hand on the sensor and put your phone beside it.

I followed the directions. After placing the phone down, my palm rested on the sensor. Electricity shot through my body and I was flung backwards. The lights in the ship rotated and blinked until Pixa’s voice suddenly rang out.

“Wow. Look at this ship. It’s very different from mine,” she said.
