“There’s so many big things happening in the world and I worry about you.”

“Andy, I don’t think I need a babysitter. I appreciate it, but?—”

“It’s already a done deal.”

“What do you mean? Done deal?”

“He’s already almost there. When you get home from work, he should be there. He’ll hang around because I realize I didn’t do enough for you. I’m sorry. I dropped the ball.” Was she talking about the incident between the aliens and me at her house?

“I don’t think I need your help, so if he hangs around the house all day, how is he going to help me? What if I’m in danger at work?”

“Do you think you’re going to be in danger at work? What are you doing this?—”

“I work for a high-security laboratory. It’s dangerous but they have security. And I know you’re lying about something again and it hurts. You’re getting angry at me about the fact that things are happening that I can’t help you with.”

“What do you mean, you know I’m lying?”

“I know you’re lying about something and you won’t let me in.”

“Chloe, there are a lot of big things happening in the world and in the country. Maybe the universe. Everything.”

“I guess this is just like the last time we talked. We are at a standstill. I am sick of the lies. I am sick of being by myself, forever an island.”

“You’re not alone.”

“Andy, we’re best friends. Why can’t you let me in? Do you know sometimes your mother would tell me weird things about aliens? Now, I’m a genuine believer.”

“What did she tell you?”

“Andy.”

“Chloe.”

Anger built up inside me. I was done. I hung up then slammed the phone down on my desk. When would the lies end?

Chapter 41

Ricon

Before Chloe started the car, she turned to me with a frown on her face. She seemed upset ever since I came out of the lab with Dr. Mahma.

“It seems that Andy has hired someone to guard up my house, i.e., her house. But she still will not tell me why or what’s going on, so I guess it’s an alien.”

“Did she give a name?” I asked.

“No, she didn’t and I don’t even know if it’s someone she knows since it’s her ‘boyfriend’s people’.”

“Chloe, are you okay? You’re being really aggressive right now,” I said as I grabbed her hand and squeezed it before she grabbed the gear stick.

Chloe wretched her hand away from mine and started the car. “I know you can’t control the pheromones but can you not touch me if you’re not gonna give me your knot? “

Something about that statement wretched through my heart, like she dug a knife in it. “Chloe, I’m sorry that you’re stuck in the middle of it, but you’re just human and I don’t want to hurt you. You can’t handle being knotted.”

She turned away from me and backed the car out of the parking lot. When we reached the house, just like she warned, there was an alien sitting on the chair on the porch, waiting for Chloe. He had some sort of device covering up his features. He wore a tight leather jacket and his skin still looks a little gray like he was sick. I couldn’t think off the top of my head what species he was. A streak of possessive rage shot through me when I saw him. Would he try to flirt with my dear Chloe? Scratch that, she’s not mine. This wasn’t an alien I recognized from the ship and I didn’t like it. Would he know I wasn’t human?

Chloe jumped out of the car before I could. She stared at the man on the porch for a second. “What’s your name?” she said.

His eyes narrowed. “Roger.”
