Andy’s cheek twitched as she looked up from her cereal. “Yeah.”

Brutix stared uncomfortably at his cold pizza. He said it was much better than cereal. “You said Roger left?”

“I think he said that NaughtyFans girl was special.”

“This isn’t good. Chex didn’t want me to let him go. But he tried to save me. He needed a second chance.”

“He was fine till the next day. Maybe he shouldn’t have gotten on the internet. Whatever.”

“What about what he said?”

“What?”

“He said—” She was about to ask about the mate thing.

“Got to go! Wash my dishes, Brutix!” I yelled as I grabbed my backpack and left the house. We talked over pizza about her being mated to an alien. She avoided the obvious: her position in the universe. My best friend wasn’t human, nor was she normal. She was walking royalty.

After clocking in, I noticed the doctor wasn’t in yet. I texted him to see if he was coming in. He answered that he was sick and I could have a half day after filing some papers. The lab was quiet. Even though I spent half my days here by myself in silence, something felt off. Was it because Ricon was gone? Was I technically married to an alien? Did I miss Ricon? I sighed again as I walked into the storage closet. Sometimes I joked to myself that this place was just nothing but labs and closets.

The door clicked behind me. I turned around. The two aliens were standing there, Rzel and Tymla. I gasped and jumped backward.

Rzel whispered, “Little human is all by herself today.”

“I heard your mate left you,” Tymla hissed.

“You don’t know that,” I blustered.

The one grinned, but his smile was too wide. Too tall. Too monstrous. “We heard he quit.”

“He found a different job,” I lied.

One man stepped closer to me and touched my face. “We know where you live. We can follow you home. It’s funny how you were close to the Lady and now you’re here. Mated to a morynth.”

“There’s another alien there right now, anyway. He’ll kick your ass.”Another lie.

Rzel looked at his friend. “Why are you always around aliens, human? What makes you special?”

“Nothing.”

“He gave her his knot and left. That’s messed up,” Tymla said.

The one touching me nodded. “Yes, that’s true. I guess he doesn’t really care about you.”

I faked a smile. “You are acting like that’s not normal for me. Everyone leaves me in the end.”

“Just like that bitch Heather and that hybrid.”

I pursed my lips. If they knew Andy was here, it would endanger her. They already mentioned killing her. I had to keep them away from the house. “Why are you here bothering me?” I asked.

“We want the ships.”

“Guess what? The doctor says one seems even more broken than it used to be.”

“And look who disappeared. Your mate. Coincidence?”

I stepped back into the filing cabinet and the shelves dug into my back. I winced in pain while Tymla giggled. The sound was so wretched I wanted to vomit. “Did you know he was stealing parts?”

I swallowed.
