He leans in close, which is more seductive than threatening. I try to keep my breathing steady as his enormous frame presses into me. “Do you ever stop putting yourself in risky situations? Do you ever listen to logic and do as you are told?” His breath tickles my neck, and I shiver in his arms. He smirks, seeming to get the response he wants.

“Not usually,” I say as my gaze trails from his lips to his eyes. A fire flares within me and my shadows seem to stoke the flames. His hip applies the right amount of pressure to make it impossible to get out from under him. But he’s not hurting me. I test him by shifting, as if looking for a way to escape.

Theo responds by planting his foot between my feet and leaning his thigh into me. The unexpected contact with my clit sends tingles of pleasure through me, and I whimper. His eyes lock on my mouth and both our breaths quicken.

“If you knew what was good for you, you’d listen,” he says as he leans in. His body flush with mine is entirely too much. His stiffening cock pushes into my leg and the desire to stroke it is overwhelming.

I can’t think.

I can’t breathe.

I need him like I need air to survive.

“Tell me, Theo. Do you know what’s good for me?” My words break as I pant for air.

He runs his nose along my jawline. His lips faintly brush my skin as his breath teases me. My lips part as I try to draw in air. I’m burning alive under his touch. I dig my nails into his chest and a low rumble comes from him.

Touch me, please. I need you, Theo.

“Mmm ... roses,” he says, taking a deep breath.

The sound vibrates through his chest and into mine. A man sniffing me would normally disgust me, but when Theo does it, I’m weak in the knees. I want him to take all of me in.

Gods, I need him more than I’ve needed anything in my life. I’m dying of thirst, and he’s the water to quench my desire. He moves his head out from my hair to look at me. His eyes scan my face as his lips part. Our chests rise and fall in time with one another.

“Theo.” His name is a raspy plea from my lips.

Theo steps back so quickly that I think someone has pulled him away from me. I fall back into the bookcases, my ass smacking into a shelf, knocking books to the floor. He adjusts his pants, trying to get his hard cock more comfortable.

“Your husband,” he barks. “That’s who’s good for you.”

My mouth falls open as I stare, utterly confused by his words.

“What?” I yell, causing my voice to echo off the walls.

Theo glares at me, his jaw tight and his nostrils flaring.

“The king,” he shouts back before he turns, heading back toward the center of the library.

I stand, trying to wrap my head around what just happened. How did we go from the verge of coming together again to him turning away from me? His words finally cut through the lust haze in my mind. He stopped because of Asher.

Oh gods, no.

“Theo, stop. You don’t understand,” I shout, sprinting after him. I catch up near the crimson chairs and table at the center of the library. I grab his arm, and he spins to face me, anger darkening his eyes.

“Will you please let me explain?” I plead, still holding his arm, hoping the sparks will distract him from trying to escape again.

“There’s nothing to explain. Does King Asher really think all of this is going to work?” he demands, yanking his arm out of my grasp.

“What?” I don’t understand.

“He’s smart, I’ll give him that. Sending his beautiful queen to seduce me. Did he really think I would cave and give him whatever he wants for you?” His upper lip curls as if disgusted by the idea.

That hurts. A lot.

My desperation is replaced with anger.

“Is that what you think of me? That I’m just a pawn for a man?” He has some audacity to think I would allow a man to use me to gain power. I’ve only ever done that to protect him. And now he thinks I’m some puppet for Asher.
