“If you keep moaning like that, we won’t leave this alley until you’re screaming my name,” I say in warning.

The queen bites down on her bottom lip and nods enthusiastically.

She’s going to be the death of me.

“Where did she go? My queen? I mean ..., shit, Marcus, what’s her name in the village?” Hiram’s shaky whispers come from the pathway leading to the alley.

We freeze as footsteps echo around us. I reluctantly release her and take a step back. I adjust my cock uncomfortably in my trousers as the queen smooths out her dress.

“What do we do?” I whisper from our little hiding spot, trying to keep the concern out of my voice.

We were so close to being caught. The queen grins at me. Her lips plump from our kissing. She nods to some low pallets set along the stone wall.

“Take a seat. We’ll say we were taking a break or something.” She slides her hand into mine to lead me over. I sit down beside her as she situates herself, wiping moisture from around her lips.

I stare at her finger as it trails along her skin. The whole scene feels oddly familiar, as if I’ve been here before. But that’s impossible since I’ve never been to Umbra or their village. The dark stone around us makes the queen’s red curls and green dress stand out. They appear as if they’re the only color in a sea of darkness.

Footsteps and harsh whispers grow louder.

“Is everything ok, Theo?” the queen asks, placing a gentle hand on my leg.

I drag my gaze to hers only for the sense of déjà-vu to grow. My mind claws at itself, trying to remember. A pang of pain spikes across my head, causing me to wince.

“Yes. It just feels like I’ve been here before. Must have been a dream or something,” I answer, forcing a small smile. The queen’s lips part.

“There you are. What are you doing?” Hiram’s husky voice comes from the opening of the alcove.

We both turn to find Hiram and Marcus glaring at us with daggers in hand. I instinctively reach out to pull the queen behind me. She pats me on the back, and I sit back on my pallet. Hiram raises an eyebrow at the interaction.

“We were taking a break. The crowd was a little unexpected for Theo, so we thought we’d step away for a moment to get some air,” the queen says selling the lie so easily.

If it’s this easy for her to lie to her men, what about me?I shake my head, trying to force away the thoughts.

Hiram slides his dagger into his belt, but Marcus keeps it aimed at me. Hiram walks to the queen, offering her his hand to stand.

“A word, your majesty,” he says, more as an order than a request. The queen’s lips pinch tight together before she slides her hand into his, and they step to the side.

Marcus doesn’t take his eyes off me. Glaring at me with the same disgust I normally have, but after today, I’m not sure if I have it in me anymore.

I pretend to be studying the alley while eavesdropping on Hiram and the queen. He tries to keep his voice low, but among all this stone it still echoes.

“What do you think you are doing? This is exactly what Nyx was talking about,” Hiram says, frustrated.

“I told you we were taking a break,” the queen answers innocently.

Hiram huffs in annoyance.

“Was this break his idea? A way to get you secluded and out of our sight?” Hiram retorts.

“No, it was a mutual idea. I’m fine, Hiram. I told you both to trust him. When are you going to listen to me?” the queen answers curtly.

Nyx and Hiram don’t trust me, but the queen does. That must mean something, right?

Marcus takes a step closer to me. His grip tightens on his dagger.

Let’s add Marcus to the not trusting Theo group.

I shift back on the pallets, attempting to put distance between us.
