“Have a seat at the bar. I’ll grab you some wine,” I say as I push open the door to the back room.

“You are the best, V!” She smiles brightly at me and takes the seat closest to the door.

I grab a tray, load it up with four mugs of ale and one of wine, then walk back to the bar. I stop and give Amelia her wine, which she takes gleefully and drinks immediately. She moans as the sweet fruit wine of Fati hits her tongue. I giggle at her overdramatic response and head to Theo’s table.

Theo placed himself at the end of the table along the walkway with his back to the wall. His eyes keep watch over the entire space. Always the guard, even when not on duty.

He catches me approaching, and his face lights up. If I didn’t know better, I would say this man finds me attractive. What I wouldn’t give to act on that.

I stop at the end of the table and squeeze my thighs together as filthy thoughts flood my mind. I hand the ale over to the men, ensuring Theo is last.

“Thank you, Vivienne,” he says with a smirk.

I need to move before this man makes me melt from the way he is looking at me.

“Not a problem at all, Theo. Let me know when you need another round,” I say with a little too much sexual undertone, but I am sure no one will notice.

“Oh, I will be sure to do that,” he says with a hungry look in his eyes that causes me to squirm.

I hurry away to keep myself from drooling on him and make it back to the bar to busy myself with tasks, trying to calm my nerves.

“Sooo, the captain?” Amelia says in a teasing tone.

“What about him?” I reply flatly, trying to hide my sexual frustration.

“If I had a man that gorgeous looking at me with half the fire there’s in his eyes, I would be a pile of ashes on the floor,” my friend says while cutting a look over her shoulder at the table.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I reply unconvincingly.

A giggle escapes from Amelia as she looks back at me.

“Yeah, keep telling yourself that. I guess I won’t need to leave a candle lit for you tonight,” she says with a wink as she finishes her mug of wine.

I have no clever retort, so I choose to turn away and work on tidying up.

As the evening wears on, we have a steady flow of people in and out, with a few who seem to linger, socializing the night away.

Harvey and I perform our silent bar dances, ensuring we have satisfied patrons. Amelia sits at the bar until I cut her off after three mugs of wine. She leaves, cursing at me under her breath, all the while telling me she will see me in the morning. I love her and her drunk antics.

I stay close to Theo all night. When dropping off another round of ale, I stand beside him, close enough to feel the warmth of his body. I feel his eyes follow me as I serve other patrons. Heat skirts my skin wherever his eyes trail. The darkness inside me hums happily at the sensation, causing me to shiver.

He watches me as I clean a nearby table. I lean forward, giving him a better view of my breasts. I fight back a smile as he squirms in his seat.

Theo sips on his second mug of ale as Harvey announces last call. I head over to Theo to see if he needs another round before closing.

Jonathan is standing at a high table with a few other patrons, and he watches me as I pass. I’ve lost track of how much he’s had to drink. I tried cutting him off earlier but soon realized his friends were handing him the mugs they ordered. He is visibly drunk and sways as he holds onto the table for support.

At Theo’s table, I try to stand as far away from Jonathan and as close to Theo as possible without making either look intentional. Theo smiles up at me, and I notice his eyes are glossier now than before. He must not drink much if he’s feeling the effects of two mugs of ale.

“Would you like another round before we close up for the evening?” I ask, making eye contact.

“I think we are all good but thank you for checking,” he answers.

“Great. If you could pass me your empties, I’ll get those out of your way,” I say, reaching over Theo to grab one of the empty mugs.

His hand brushes my thigh as I lean forward, and I flinch as a spark shoots through my body. I nearly combust at the feeling and swallow hard to stop the blazing fire within me. I tell myself his touch was an accident and collect the remaining mugs before heading back to the bar to wash them. Harvey slips into the back to check on a few things as patrons leave. I wish them a good night as I clean the mugs at the basin behind the counter.

I hear shuffled footsteps and assume another patron is leaving. I smell him before I see him. The overwhelming scent of sour ale and musky body odor gags my senses before I can register what is happening.
