Chapter 6

Theo

Iwake up to pounding on the door and in my head.

Gods, where am I, and why do I feel like a carriage has run me over?

I press my palms into my eyes to counteract the pain shooting through my skull. Nope, that doesn’t help.

The knocking at the door continues.

“Open up!” a man’s voice yells from the other side. I finally glance around the room and realize I am at the Aurora Inn.

How in the realm did I get here?

I storm over to the door, begging for the hammering to stop. My limbs feel as though they are being weighed down with stones. Every part of my body hurts.

How much did I have to drink last night?

I swing open the door to find an old man with his fist raised, ready to knock on the door again.

“What do you want?” I shout. The sound sears my ears, causing them to ring.

The abrupt light from opening the door burns my eyes, causing a wave of nausea to roll through my stomach.

The man, the innkeeper, I assume, stares at me, his mouth falling open.

“Umm ... ah ... Captain Kincaid. I didn’t know you were in here. I thought ... never mind. I will let you be, but checkout is soon,” he stammers.

He seems genuinely shocked by my presence, so I must not have been the one to check in here last night.

“What time is it?” I ask gruffly.

I need to find a physician or healer to help with this pain pulsating behind my eyes.

“It’s after eight in the morning, sir,” he says timidly.

Shit.

Morning training starts soon and if I’m late, I’ll be subjected to more disappointed lectures from my father.

Too preoccupied with my predicament, I close the door on the innkeeper without another word.

What happened to me last night and why does my head feel so fuzzy?I rack my mind, trying to figure out my last memory, but everything feels as if it’s hidden within a fog and muffled. I can only recall a ghost-like figure standing before me with no distinguishing elements.

I push my palms into my eyes again and run my hands through my hair. A sharp sting on the back of my hand causes me to wince and look down to see it covered in cuts and bruises. Did I punch someone or something last night?

Gods, I really need to get my head on straight.
