I set my mug back on the counter and blurt, “I need to get some air.”

Pushing away, I stand wobbly on my feet and head out the door. Barely anyone bothers to look up. Just another inebriated woman leaving the tavern.

Stepping out into the cool night, I take a deep breath, trying to douse the fire igniting inside me. Using the wall to steady myself, I trudge to a cold iron bench and fall into it. My head spins from the movement.

Leaning my head back, I close my eyes, wishing things could be different. Wishing I wasn’t bound to a shadow monster. And if I’m not free to be with my Amari, wishing that I could simply have a mutually beneficial arrangement with Kira, without her needing more. But I’m trapped. I can’t have Theo or give Kira what she wants. I’m just stuck in the shadows with Asher until my dying day.

The bench flexes as Kira takes a seat next to me. The air around her is tense, and she huffs as she sits.

“Do I disgust you so much that we can’t share a nice evening of drinks together in the tavern?” The anguish in her voice has me glancing sideways.

Kira pinches her lips into a tight line, emphasizing her frustration with me.

I let out a sigh, closing my eyes again.

“No, Kira, I needed fresh air for an entirely different reason.” A snicker escapes me, but she remains silent.

Her apple scent invades my senses, reigniting the embers inside.

“I was having a hard time not picturing myself between your thighs,” I declare. The wine has definitely loosened my tongue.

Kira shifts her weight.

“It was easier for me to step outside than worry about what I would do if I stayed. It wouldn’t be fair to you if I acted on those thoughts, since we’re not on the same page,” I state.

The wine has removed all of my inhibitions and common sense. My clothes will surely be next.

I hear her gulp beside me.

“Oh,” is her only response.

This is the most honest I have been with Kira in a long time. I want to say more, but my thoughts are a jumbled mess of words and sexual desire. We remain quiet for several long moments.

The distant sounds of birds distract me as I sink back into the bench. I could easily fall asleep right here. My brain feels muddled. Everything seems to swirl.

This may have been a mistake.

“What if we were on the same page?” Kira’s voice startles me, and I jump, then settle back into my laid-back state.

My body feels too heavy.

“Are we though?” I ask, and even I can hear how slurred my words are becoming.

Before I can form any more words, Kira is straddling my lap. Her hands weave into my hair, tilting my face up, forcing me to look at her.

“Tonight, we’re on the same page, Lily.” She devours my lips hungrily, as if she had been starving for the taste of me.

It all feels like a dream, as if I’m simply watching the scene unfold. My brain has completely shut off, and I surrender to the dizzy and intoxicating feeling of her body pressing into mine.

Gods, she feels too good.

My fingers dig into her hips as I part my lips, trailing my tongue along her bottom lip. She opens for me, and we share the taste of the sweet and fruity Fati wine.

She grips my head tight, deepening our kiss, and grinds into me, asking for more. Tracing my hands up her toned body, I slip a hand under the low-cut neckline of her dress and her bra, finding her peaked nipple. I tug on it gently, eliciting a little moan from her into my mouth. I smile at her noise and move my hand to her other nipple to do the same.

Kira bites my bottom lip, and it’s my turn to moan. My body buzzes as I run my hands down her back to her ass and give it a firm pat. She jumps slightly, giving me full access to grip her ass with both hands. A surge rushes through me, and I push forward to stand but immediately fall back to the bench.

“I may be a little too drunk to attempt that,” I slur and laugh too loudly.
