He runs his hands through his already disheveled hair.

Is that a look of genuine concern on his face?He looks anguished.

He glares at me. “Mind your business, Captain,” he snaps, and my rage returns, hot and unyielding.

I press my face against the bars, trying to get as close to the guard as possible.

“Why do you allow your king to hurt a woman you obviously care about?” I ask, needing to know how this can be justified.

He stares at me. His mouth opens and he blinks repeatedly.

“You don’t know what you are talking about, so again, mind your business.” He turns his back to me, trying to end the conversation.

The captain moves to the opposite wall. I project all my hatred and anger through my eyes as I stare him down. “You may tolerate his abuse of women, but I don’t. Let King Asher know I’d like a word with him regarding that woman.”

The captain lets out a low chuckle and averts his gaze, ignoring my demand completely. I mutter curses at him as I turn and head to my bed. This is futile. I must have misunderstood his previous look. He can’t possibly care about anyone.

I lie down in my bed, trying to calm my rage. The black silk sheets are cool and soft on my bare chest. I lean back on the dark wood headboard and cross my arms. I glower at the captain until my eyelids grow heavy, and I fall asleep.

Chapter 19

Lily

Irub my temples, trying to counteract the throb setting in again. Nyx looks down at me from the other side of my desk in the council room, concern wrinkling his brow.

“I’m fine, Nyx. Just due for another tea to help with the headache,” I say, bringing my gaze to him, but my words don’t soothe his worry.

If I thought he was protective before, this is a whole new level of mother hen Nyx. He won’t let me out of his sight. I had to lock him out of my bathing chamber to clean up this morning.

I barely notice the cuts on my cheek and my black eye. A handprint curves around my neck, five clear lines from fingers digging into my skin. I expected to wince when I did my assessment this morning but only a hint of tenderness remains.

I’ve always healed quickly, the shadows within me not allowing pain to linger too long. While my skin is painted in varying shades of purple and blue, within a few days, none of it will remain. Only the deepest scars remain. The ones inflicted by Oren.

But the headache persists. The throb pulsates, and I close my eyes, willing the pain away. Loma’s healing teas have been the only thing to help.

Without speaking, Nyx cracks the door open. “The queen would like tea from Loma. Will you please go fetch it for her?” he orders and shuts the door.

“Marcus will be back with it shortly. Anything else bothering you?” Nyx says, stepping in front of my desk.

“Yes, a very overbearing general who won’t stop hovering,” I snip, cracking an eye open to look at him.

He sets his palms on my desk and leans into my space.

“Because the last time I took my eyes off of you, I almost lost you,” the words come out as a rumble from deep in his chest.
