And then… nothing.

Thirty seconds became sixty, then ninety. Sophie groaned. “Goddamn it, Levi,” she muttered, dropping her head back and squeezing her eyes shut.

“Has our ghost got a name now?” Mitch asked, too close for comfort in the small box they were trapped in.

The deep, moody notes of his cologne permeated the air, making Sophie want to bury her face in the stupid flannel that made him stupidly attractive.

Levi was lucky he was incorporeal, because Sophie wanted to throw something at him.

She stuck to one-night stands for a reason. There were always clear boundaries, and no one bothered sharing personal details like favorite movies. And they definitely didn’t discuss what three items they’d save in a fire while the other person chewed on the end of a ballpoint pen, making it impossible for to stop staring at their lips. Their inviting pink lips.

Damn it.

Mitch was a dog with a bone, and he was pawing at the door of her personality and begging to be let in.

Even worse? It wasworkingfor her.

The elevator groaned again, then swayed.

Mitch tossed his head back, sending his exasperated “oh my god” directly to the ceiling.

Sophie clenched her fists—Fucking Levi— but schooled her expression.

“All right, buttercup, calm your farm. There’s got to be a way out of here.” She pushed the call button, but there was no response from the security desk in the lobby. Probably on the fritz again.

“Ohsure.” He nodded. He had to be the only person Sophie knew who could imbue a nod with sarcasm. “Yeah, in this very old shoebox that sways every time you step into it. I’m sure they wanted to make sure there were multiple exit points. Just in case someone accidentally locked themselves in.”

She smiled as she pushed the button again, then tested out the others. Nothing.

Great.

She gave up, resting against the wall opposite Mitch. There wasn’t much space between them, wasn’t any way to avoid how good he looked, soft and lean, and oh so touchable.

“Earth to Sophie. You aren’t hyperventilating, are you? Blink twice for yes.”

Why did he have to smell so amazing? It was deep and sophisticated. Not at all what she expected from a guy who appeared to own more ball caps than shoes.

“Sophie,” he singsonged.

“What?” she snapped, her self-control hanging on by a thread. She needed to get out of this elevator and away from Mitch. She needed to shove him against the wall and shut him up with her tongue.

She really, really needed to throw something at Levi.

“Oh no, you don’t.” He tapped out a beat against the wall, but he held himself rigidly, his shoulders hiked high and his jaw clenched tight.

Was he claustrophobic? God, she hoped not.

“I spent years watching my mom ice my dad out when they’d fight. Until one day, she up and left him without a word. Just gone, off to a new life, while he blamed himself. But I’m not doing that. So if you want to scream, go ahead. It’s better than bottling it up. But I’m not letting you go back to ignoring me.”

Sophie snorted. This guy was somethingelse.“Anyone ever tell you you’re one of a kind?”

“My dad tells me I’m special every day.”

She had to bite back a grin. Nowthatshe believed. “Yeah, I’m not sure that’s what he means.”

Mitch’s laugh ricocheted off the stainless-steel walls. With the sound came a sense of relief. His body relaxed, and his posture loosened.

A warmth bloomed under her skin, lovely and dangerous. Because she’d done that.
