“I’m sorry about your mom. My, um,” she fumbled, “my dad did the same thing. Except when he left, it was with my mom’s best friend.”

“Ouch, that’s low.”

“The lowest.” Sophie sighed. “We Anderson gals have shit taste in friends.”

“Nah, that’s not on either of you. Sometimes we put our trust in the wrong people. But that doesn’t mean we should stop trusting.”

He was starting to sound like Levi. Fantastic.

Mitch shook his head. “If you call yourself a friend, then back it up. Act like it. I can’t stand people who aren’t true to their word. It’s not hard.”

It really didn’t seem to be for him.

Had Mitch ever gone a day wondering what he’d done wrong when a text had gone unanswered too long? Or feel a pull in his gut to follow it up withif you don’t want to, that’s cool too, orus, right?accompanied by a meme of two friends who didn’t need to be in constant contact, even while spinning his wheels trying to sum up what he’d said to push them away.

“It’s on me. Maybe if I wasn’t so desperate—”

“Yeah, I’m gonna call bullshit on that.”

“Do you want to tell this story?”

“Okay. You had a friend who was a dick. Does it suck? Yeah. But I guarantee you it wasn’t your fault. And if anyone doesn’t want you for you, they’re not a good friend.”

There was a small, discolored patch on the panel behind Mitch’s head. It was easier to focus on that than his expression. The concern was too much.

The truth of what he was saying was even worse.

“You know, you’re kind of annoyingly difficult to hate.”

She might as well have told him she thought about him naked with the way his smile curled. A way-too-cute-for-her-own-fucking-good smile.

Shit. She was about to do something ridiculous.

“No, don’t stop. Tell me more about how much you like me.”

If she started, they might be there all night. “Don’t you ever shut up?”

“Sometimes.”

She could think of one way she’d like to shut him up, and if the way Mitch was fixated on her mouth was any indication, she wasn’t the only one thinking it.

Damn him.

He was hot and cute and dorky and just… Mitch. It was annoying. And it was making her feel things. Things that weren’t strictly boxed in thewanna bangcolumn. Except anything outside of that was a no-go.

So… kissing. Because Sophie needed to right this ship before it sailed out of her reach.

Her body was screaming at her. Touch him, kiss him, anything. They were so close already, but she moved slowly, telegraphing her movements, giving him time to stop her.

This was all kinds of wrong.

But she was going to do it anyway.

The breath caught in her throat when Mitch licked his lips and dropped his gaze to her mouth before dragging it back up.

Okay, those were all good signs.

“I’m going to kiss you now,” she said. She didn’t want there to be any doubt.
