Please say yes.

Mitch picked up before the second ring. “What’s up?”

Sophie snorted. He was so ridiculous. “Is that seriously how you answer your phone?”

“Sophie?”

“No, it’s your local clinic, wanting to know if you’re satisfied with your latest STD check.”

He didn’t miss a beat. “Actually, I found a new lump on my left nut I wanted to ask you about. It’s kind of puffy—”

She threw her head back and cackled. “Ew, no, shut up.” She heaved a breath. “Um, if you’re free…” Fuck, when had this gotten so hard? “I’m at Bar Clara in Midtown, and I’d really like to see you.”

“This sounds suspiciously like a date.”

Thank god no one could see her blush. “I’m hanging up now.”

* * *

Mitch looked downright sexy in dark jeans and a black t-shirt that highlighted the length of his torso, like it had been designed precisely to make Sophie debate what she wanted more — to wrap herself in his scent or rip the damn thing off him right here in the middle of the bar.

“One-dollar shots? In this economy? I’m in.”

Since the moment he’d arrived, a warm, happy buzz had settled in her veins. Like finding the last pair of shoes in your size on sale or a perfect first kiss.

Even under the glow of the purple overhead lights, she could see the same joy reflected in him. He smiled so freely, the skin around his eyes crinkling more than usual. Every move was easy, his hand a brand on her lower back, as drawn to her as she was to him.

She’d asked and he’d come. And it felt damn good.

“Good, because the first round is on you. I’m just going to run to the ladies’ room.”

“Hey.” He reeled her back in with sure hands and lips, then kissed her hard and deep, licking into her mouth.

Sophie was a soft serve ice cream on a hot day, melted and dripping in seconds.

“What was that for?” she breathed, though she could barely hear her own voice over the noise.

Even so, Mitch angled in and said, “Because you’re beautiful. And you’re mine.” And he kissed her again.

Sophie’s heart matched the bar’s bass beat in power and rhythm as she dashed to the bathroom. Tonight was the start of a new era for her, for them, and it was making her giddy.

So much so that when Levi showed up looking smug, this timeoutsidethe bathroom, she simply rolled her eyes fondly and kept going. Fine. He was right. Mitch’s appearance in her life was one of the best things to happen to her in years, and she couldn’t imagine her life without him now.

Didn’t want to.

The bar had only grown busier as the night wore on, but she found Mitch more or less where she’d left him.

And, naturally, her tiny bird bladder had demanded a toilet break, and now there was a pink-haired woman in the cutest shorts Sophie had ever seen dancing up to him.

She pursed her lips. This was fine. If she wanted to dance with Mitch, it was within her right. Even if the sight of it made Sophie go a little feral. Even though she wanted to go over and claim him.

When cute shorts rolled her body against him, Sophie was already moving. In the space of two heartbeats, she was slipping her hand around Mitch’s wrist and turning him until she could wrap her arms around his neck and let every damn person in the building know who he belonged to.

Mitch grinned, wide and gleeful, his hands roaming from her shoulders to her ass and back again. It felt good to claim and be claimed.
