The reply was instant.

boooooo must have been designed by a man

Sophie smiled, tucking her phone back into her purse. According to the itinerary she’d been given, she’d have to suffer through at least another hour of festivities before she could leave. And with every passing minute, she got more agitated.

Maybe she could entice Mitch back into the closet they’d stumbled upon earlier.

Movement in her periphery caught her attention, and she found herself standing next to Harrison Kyle, one of the night’s special guests. He cut a handsome figure in all black, although Sophie wouldn’t have recognized him without Carl’s extensive cheat sheet. No doubt he’d blow a gasket if the mayor’s daughter didn’t recognize the guests of honor.

“You look like you’re having as much fun as I am,” she said.

“People aren’t my strong suit.”

She laughed. “Join the club.”

“Think they’d notice if we snuck out?”

“Considering my mom is set to bring you and your partner on stage in twenty minutes, yeah, probably.”

Harrison nodded, solemn. “Shit. That’s what I was worried about.”

A roar of laughter nearby caught Sophie’s attention. A group of familiar businessmen in expensive suits patted one another on the back.

Sophie sighed, hoping Carl didn’t need her to actually talk with any of them. There were no more than five people in this room she actually wanted to have a conversation with, and that number included her mom and Mitch. The third was Harrison’s partner, Hayley. Sophiemayhave had something of a massive crush on her, but she hadn’t quite worked up the courage to introduce herself.

And that was a problem she had better get over quickly, considering the woman herself was walking toward them, drinks in hand.

“One house red for the gorgeous man in black,” she said, her accent rolling over Sophie in a smooth tumble. “I didn’t ask for the vintage, but I’ve been assured it’s serviceable.”

“If you’re waiting for a laugh, you might want to get comfortable.”

Hayley wrinkled her nose as she playfully glared at Harrison. Then she leaned in for a kiss. Sophie couldn’t make out every word over the noise in the room, but she was sure she heard the word “incorrigible,” and her respect for Hayley went up a hundred notches.

“You should be proud of me,” Harrison said. “I made a friend.”

And then Sophie’s time to prepare herself ran out, as Hayley was turning the full beam of her smile on her and reaching out a hand.

She jolted when a hand slid around her waist but relaxed quickly when Mitch kissed her cheek and handed her a drink.

“Mitch, this is Hayley and Harrison.”

“You’re the ones making the movie about Chance.”

“That’s us,” Harrison confirmed.

“And what do you do, Mitch?” Hayley asked.

“Sophie and I work in records at Eastbank.”

“But he’s about to get promoted,” Sophie cut in, proud. Mitch’s talents were being recognized, and even though it meant not seeing him as much throughout the day, she was thrilled for him.

Considering it would likely take another six months to replace him in the Vault, the promotion wouldn’t stop them from sneaking in a few rendezvous when they could.

“Oh, congratulations.”

“Thanks.” He dipped his chin. “I figure while I’m waiting for this one to lock me down, I might as well get someone to call me sir.”

“Sorry,” Sophie blushed. “He’s pretty much always like this.”
