I squeeze his hands. “When does it stop wobbling?”

“When you shift your weight.”

“How do I do that?”

“Green, stop crushing my hands.”

“No. I don’t want to fall.”

“Stop panicking. I’m right here. I’ll catch you.”

I stare into his sunlit brown eyes and release my grip on him. I wobble on the board until I leap off.

Parker throws his head back with laughter. “Okay, you lasted five seconds. Good start.”

“It was longer than that.”

Parker beckons me back on. “Come on, crush my hands again.”

I take his hands, careful not to hold on so tight.

“See the bolt patterns,” Parker says. “You want to have both your feet centered on them.”

The bolts are fixed to the wheels, and I feel dumb for not realizing they’d help distribute my weight. I step my feet over the bolt patterns, but the board still rocks beneath me.

Parker bends his knees, taking my weight. “Your toes should hang a little off the board. And if your heels hang off a bit, that’s okay too.”

“Whoa.” The board rocks harder as I try to keep my balance.

“You got it. Now bend your knees.”

I lower on bended knees, and the board stabilizes.

“How does that feel?”

I grin. “Good.”

“Awesome. Ready to let go?”

I squeeze his hands. “Don’t you dare.”

“Ouch.” He hisses. “I wasn’t letting go. I was asking if you were ready.”

“I’m not.”

He smirks. “Clearly.”

I concentrate on the placement of my feet, making sure my toes slip over the edge, but I overdo it. The skateboard tips toward Parker and he changes position to catch me.

“Oof.” I bonk my head against his shoulder and trip over the skateboard.

Parker grunts, hopping on one foot after the skateboard flicks into his shin. “Dang it.”

“I’m sorry!”

He sniggers, holding me against him. “It’s okay. I’ll have a bruise to commemorate the day.”

I look down at his lower leg. “Does it really hurt?”
