“Wow, your house isso nice,” I say when we pull up on Parker’s driveway.

“Thanks,” he mutters, craning his neck to view the front door.

“Looking for someone?”

“More like hoping not to see someone.” He opens his door and presses the clicker for the garage door. “Shall we?”

I follow him out of the car and into the garage. It has spaces for four cars, but only houses one at the moment. Parker pockets his keys and moves to the racking along the wall. There’s five shelves filled with all kinds of sporting equipment. There’s bicycles hanging on the back wall, and when I glance up I find kayaks tucked amongst the rafters.

“Wow. My garage has boxes of old school projects and our childhood toys. Your family is so sporty.”

“Yeah, Dad wants us to stay active,” Parker replies. “He used to do stuff with us, but he gets too busy these days.”

“And your Mom?”

“She stopped working a few years ago, and now fills her days making sure my brothers get to all their activities.”

“And what about you? Do you get free range?”

“Well, I can drive myself. And before then, I was always at Kai’s and his parents always took our group everywhere.”

I move over to the racking with him. “And I guess I’m now in this group too.”

Parker pulls out three sleeping bags. “I know Lewis doesn’t have extra stuff at home, so I’ll pack for Yvie too. Just a guess, but I don’t think she camps either.”

“Did the perfect manicure tip you off?”

He wiggles his eyebrows. “You think she’s perfect too?”

I retch, shoving him away.

He laughs, moving the sleeping bags to the side. He then pulls out two canvas duffle bags.

“These are two-person tents,” he says, dropping them by the sleeping bags. “Maybe you and Lewis can share one.”

All the blood rushes to my head and I gasp. “What?”

Parker presses into his stomach as he laughs. “Relax. I know you’re not gonna jump his bones.”

I fan my face, trying to ease my nervous system.
