“But you and Yvie should bunk up.”

“Oh, yay,” I mumble.

He gives me side-eye as he neatens the pile against the racking. “You know it makes sense.”

I huff. “I know. But it’s easy for you. You and Lewis are already friends. Yvie and I couldn’t be more opposite.”

“Just try. I still want to hang out with Lewis when I’m finally dating Yvie.”

I nod. “I am trying. I don’t want to do anything that ruins your friendship.”

He sends me a wink. “Thanks, Kikki.”

My eyes roll back. “Ugh.”

The side door, leading into the house, opens as someone begins talking. “Parker, why didn’t you park in...” I turn around to see Mrs. Kelly with an exaggerated smile. “Oh my gosh, is this Kylie?”

“Uh, hi, Mom,” Parker says in a flat tone.

“I was waiting for you to come inside the house,” Mrs. Kelly says, walking further into the garage. “Why didn’t you tell me you were bringing Kylie over?”

“Because we’re not staying,” Parker says, avoiding his mom’s eyes.

Mrs. Kelly lifts a hand toward me. “Hi honey, I’m Parker’s mom.”

I shake her hand. “Hi Mrs. Kelly.”

“I have a vague memory of you from when you were both in middle school,” she says. “But I haven’t heard about you since starting high school. I had no idea you two had gotten so close.” She looks at Parker, batting a hand. “But then again, Parky never tells us anything.”

I puff a laugh. “Parky?”

Parker’s eyebrow raises as an air of irritation leaves him “Don’t.”

I give him my most mischievous look. “Why not, Parky? It’s cute.”

“Oh, aren’t you two adorable,” Mrs. Kelly gushes.

“Yeah, so cute,” Parker’s brother, Kurtis, says as he leans against the side doorway.

He’s only a year younger than Parker, and he’s the reason their parents know about me and Parker. Kurtis was sent the chem lab photo of us.

“We’re just here to make sure we’ve got enough gear for the camping trip,” Parker explains.

Mrs. Kelly eyes me with surprise. “You’re going on the trip?”

“Mm-hmm. But I’m not the only girl.”

Mrs. Kelly chuckles. “I can’t believe all these boys have girlfriends now. Aww, you’re all growing up so fast.”

Parker’s eyes roll. “Mom.”

I look across the racks of camping and sporting gear. “Are you guys going camping during spring break?”

“Afraid not,” she replies. “My husband’s busy with work and I have to wrangle Parker’s brothers.”

“Anyway, I need to take Kylie home,” Parker says abruptly.

“No, you can’t leave so soon,” Mrs. Kelly says, clutching my shoulder. “Come inside for a glass of iced tea and we’ll get to know you better.”
