I clear my throat. “Maybe I need lessons from you on how to take them.”

He smirks. “That can be arranged.”

When we make it to the others, Lewis suggests we go back to sideshow alley. He mustn’t want a repeat of Parker and Yvie holding hands.

Fine by me. One ride is more than enough.

Parker lets Lewis pick the game, and I can already see their competitiveness coming out. They race each other in a water pistol game. The goal is to aim the water into a clown’s mouth, which then fills a balloon. Whoever fills their balloon the fastest, wins.

As Yvette and I cheer on the boys, my lips might cheer for Parker, but my heart is screaming for Lewis. I glance at Yvie, wondering if she’s thinking about a different boy as well. It was, after all, her choice to grab onto Parker’s hand on the pirate ship.

With a filled balloon, Parker puts down the water pistol and raises his fists in a cheer. I laugh at his wild competitiveness and applaud his achievement.

“Couldn’t do it without my cheerleader,” Parker says, stealing a look my way.

I gulp as he moves in closer. Parker presses his hand into the middle of my back and leaves little to no gap between us. When his lips pout, I’m quick to push him back.

“No.”

“Come on,” he whispers.

“No.”

“But I won.”

I wriggle away from him. “I said no, Parker.”

Parker groans, backing away from me. He runs a hand through his hair and forces a smile. He steps around Lewis, sidling in close to Yvette.

“What do you think, Yvie?” Parker says with a flirtatious lilt. “Did I completely annihilate your man?”

Yvette giggles. “Yes, you were very manly with your little water gun.”

Parker leans an elbow on her shoulder. “Well, I could move up to a paintball gun. Or, maybe an airsoft?”

Lewis scoffs. “So now you want to bruise me?”

Yvette twirls a piece of hair around her finger. “What’s wrong, Lewy? You don’t think you could beat him?”

“Maybe he knows he’s too pretty to get bruised?” It comes out of my mouth before I finish the thought.

Lewis turns, grinning at me. He steps by my side and glances at Parker. “How about that? Your girlfriend thinks I’m prettier than you.”

“She didn’t exactly say that,” Parker replies, as the carnival worker props a stuffed bunny on the counter.

Before Parker can offer it to Yvette, she moves in to claim Lewis.

Her hands move into Lewis’s hair, as she says in a breathy voice, “She’s right. You’d have to be blind not to see how hot you are.” Yvette hugs Lewis and views me with a smug expression. “Right, Kylie?”

I feel two feet tall. “Mm-hmm.”

As I sink in awkwardness, a voice calls out to us.

“Oh, hi, guys,” Kai calls out, walking toward us with his arm around Tabitha.

“Crap,” Parker mumbles under his breath. Instantly, he flashes a smile and waves at them. “Hey guys.”

“What’s happening?” Lewis asks as the two join our group.
