With his foot off the gas and steadying the steering wheel, Parker regains control of our car. Kai and Tabitha drive by, waving and laughing.

“Those rats,” Parker mutters.

He slams on the gas and we take off after them.

“Do you have to go so fast?” I complain.

“Ah, yes,” he replies sarcastically. “I gotta get ‘em back.”

“I’m seriously getting motion sickness.”

“I’m trying not to spin out again,” Parker replies. “Believe me, I’m aiming to hit other people.”

He doesn’t gain on Kai and Tabitha, but Lewis and Yvette are nearby. Lewis drives and swerves to get away from us. Parker keeps on him, determined to smash into their car. But, when other cars get between us, Lewis and Yvette speed away.

Parker steers our car off the edge of the track. “Your turn to take the wheel.”

“What?” I yelp. “No way.”

Parker lifts his hands. “Take the wheel.”

“Parker,” I squeak as another car crashes into us. “You take the wheel.”

A mischievous laugh rolls out of him. “It’s your turn.”

“I didn’t sign up to drive a bumper car.”

His face nestles by mine. “You also didn’t sign up to kiss me, but you liked it.”

“Ick.” I shove his face away, making him laugh. “Fine. I’m only doing this to avoid being hit.”

“Good luck,” he teases as I take hold of the steering wheel.

I push my foot on the accelerator, and turn the bumper car too fast.

“Whoa,” Parker chokes as we slam into a car on his side.

I bunch my shoulders high and wince. “Sorry.”

He points ahead. “Just go forward. Avoid turning.”

“But the other cars are coming straight at us.”

“They’ll turn. Haven’t you ever played chicken?”

“Umm, no. That game sounds like a nightmare.”

He nudges me. “Well, welcome to your nightmare.”

I clench my jaw and straighten my arms. As Tabitha and Kai head straight for us, I scrunch my eyes closed.

Parker laughs and grabs the wheel. “Keep your eyes open, Kikki.”

I squint them open and shake my head. “Nuh-uh.”

He lets go, and I keep my arms locked, only steering when I near the tracks’ edge.

“Oof.” I hiss as we’re bumped on my side.
