Why isn’t he telling me that?

We could put an end to this charade, right here, right now.

“I have to make it work with Yvette,” he says decisively. “I have to.”

I nod slowly. “Okay.”

Lewis moves back into the kitchen. “Dad? You good?”

“Yeah. We’ve got this,” his dad replies.

Lewis moves further into the hallway. “I got a killer headache. I need to lie down. See ya round, Kylie.”

I swallow hard and force myself to look happy. “Okay. Hope you feel better.”

I mop the excess water on the kitchen floor, getting a thank you from Lewis’s dad. The gratitude feels hollow, knowing Lewis couldn’t care less about my help.

After I wring out the mop and put it back in the cupboard, I make sure the men don’t need any more help. When they thank me again, and tell me I’m free to go, I trudge my way home.

I’ve never felt more confused.

Was Lewis just lying about me? Is he using me to make Yvette jealous?

Is that all I’m good for?

All these boys keep using me, just so they can turn the head of one vapid, self-centered girl.

Twenty-One

All night I tossedand turned. I rewrote several messages to Parker, calling this whole thing off. The only thing stopping me was remembering the way Lewis looked at me the night of the fair. It’s undeniable something was between us. And then Parker’s voice circled through my mind, telling me to have faith.

I put the phone down, and escaped into fantasyland. Imagining my perfect relationship with Lewis, the giddiness warmed my soul, I soon lulled back to sleep.

Beep, beep.

I blink myself awake, rubbing the sleep from my eyes. I lift the phone and squint at the time.
