10:30 a.m.

I squint again, seeing a notification. A text from Parker.

I put the phone down, not awake enough to read whatever he wants.

Beep, beep.

“Ugh.” I groan. “If that’s you again, Parker, I’m throwing the phone across the room.”

I fling my arm across my eyes, hoping to drift back to sleep.

No such luck. My ringtone buzzes beside me.

“Ugh!” I grizzle. I reef the phone into the air, and see,“Tessa Calling.”

“Oh,” I mutter, hitting the answer button. “Hello?”

“Whoa. You sound croaky.”

I pinch the bridge of my nose. “Just woke up.”

She sniggers. “Late night?”

“I kept waking up. Stupid thoughts clogging my brain.”

“Wanna talk about it? Could help to purge.”

“Thanks, but I’m too groggy. Besides, I managed to think happy thoughts and got back to sleep.”

“Let me guess. You went into fantasyland with that boy.”

“I’m too predictable.”

“Isn’t it too hard to think about him now that he has a girlfriend?”

Oh, sis, you have no idea. “No, because in fantasyland, I’m his girlfriend.”

“Oh, Kikki, that’s not healthy.”

I hug my pillow. “Oh,shoosh. It soothes me.”

“Fine. As long as it’s just in your head, you can’t get hurt. Although, I’m worried about your emotions. I don’t think you guard yourself enough.”

“I’m plenty guarded. You have no idea how big my comfort zone is.”

“No need to get defensive.”

“Sorry. I’m just sleepy.”

“Okay, I’ll let you wake up properly and call you later.”

“Sounds great. See ya, Tess.”

“Bye Kikki.”

I lower the phone, and see the notifications from Parker’s text messages. I open the message chain, and sit up as I read his words.

“What do you mean this is over? What happened? We can fix this.”
