I rub the heel of my palm against my forehead. What the heck?

I scroll up and my chin drops. I didn’t erase the text I was writing to him. When I dropped the phone in the middle of the night, I must’ve hit the send button.

At 3 a.m. my text pinged on Parker’s phone, saying,“I’m done. Lewis thinks I’m a massive loser. I’ll never be good enough, except when it comes to being used.”

Oh no.

Could I have been more dramatic?

I scroll down to Parker’s second text message.

“I’m sorry if something didn’t go well with Lewis. He’s just sour because Yvie’s giving him the brush off. Please don’t give up. I hate that you feel used. I’m sorry.”

My heart hurts. I exhale a steadying breath, and type a reply.“Is there any way you can forget I sent that text? I was spiraling.”

He texts back immediately.“You’re not quitting?”

“I thought about being with Lewis, and I got in a better mood.”

“That’s a relief.”

“I never meant to send that text. I thought I deleted it.”

“It wasn’t the best thing to see when I woke up this morning.”

“My bad.”

“It’s all good. As long as you’re okay.”

“I am.”

“Good. This only works if you’re happy. And remember, everything could change on the camping trip.”

I send him a thumbs up emoji because my positive mood is waning.

Do I really want to see Lewis winning over Yvette in a place I can’t leave? I’ll be stuck in the wilderness, watching him smooch and cuddle her.

My stomach flips, and I force myself out of bed. I make my way downstairs because only waffles can lift my mood.

“Why hello there, sleepy head,” Mom says, smirking as I make my way down the hallway.

“Most kids, during spring break, don’t get up before midday,” I say, wiping my eyes. “This is early for a high schooler.”

“Except, you’re a high schooler who voluntarily gets up before dawn to bake.”

I wave her off. “Whatever. I’m making waffles. You want some?”

“Mmm,” she purrs. “Would love some, but I’ve already had breakfast. Plus, I’m about to go into town and meet up with Mrs. Nelson.”

The statement jolts through me. “Kai’s mom?”

“Yes. We were talking on the phone about the camping trip and decided to meet up for coffee.”

I deadpan her. “With Kai’s mom?”

“Why do you look so shell shocked? It’s just coffee. And it’s making me feel better about you spending two nights in the wilderness.”

“Okay, have fun.”
