I stifle a laugh. “It’s the round one that has a picture of a waffle on top.”

Parker rummages inside the cupboard, eventually pulling out the right appliance.

“Good, you didn’t pick the blender,” I tease.

He sits the waffle maker on the counter. “Sorry, I’m not a kitchen wiz. At home, my mom makes the food and I help by eating it.”

“Wow. So helpful.”

He nudges me. “See. You should feel special that I’ve offered to help.”

I rub my lips, hoping to minimize my smile. “I do appreciate it.”

“Anything else I can do?”

I pour the vanilla into the mixing bowl and nod at the power socket. “Wanna plug it in?”

Parker moves the waffle maker closer to the power socket while craning his neck to view the mixing bowl. “What’s in the waffles?”

“I just followed a classic recipe, but I added choc chips for good measure.”

Parker tilts his head back, salivating. “Oh my gosh, you’re the best.”

I giggle. “You’re practically drooling.”

He slides close to me, hugging an arm around me. “Because I’ve already learned, anything you make is automatically good.”

I shiver from his touch, and it exhilarates my heart.

He removes his hand. “Sorry, I got excited. I shouldn’t have gotten so close.”

I mumble at the bowl, “No, it’s okay.”

“So, I can’t help noticing this playlist doesn’t sound like ‘Arnold’s hits.’”

I gesture at my phone. “No, it’s ‘Kikki’s Bake Time.’”

Parker grabs my phone. “Can I check it out?”

“Sure.”

“Your phone is locked.”

“Put it in front of my face.”

As I pour the batter into the waffle maker, I stare at my phone as he holds it by my side. The batter makes a satisfying sizzle as Parker scrolls through my playlist.

“Looks like a lot of pop,” he remarks.

“Nothing better to put you in a good mood.”

“Oh, wait. Here’s some interesting tracks.” He lowers the phone. “You like Frontier Leaders?”

I shy away with a coy smile. “I learned to like them. I saw the album cover on Lewis’s phone one day at the café. When I got home after that shift, I streamed the album. I didn’t love them at first, but now I can’t go a morning without listening to at least one of their songs.” I huff over the mixing bowl. “If only my playlist had been playing when Lewis came over yesterday.”

Parker puts my phone down on the counter. “Why do you say that?”

“Because he was completely mortified at the prospect of dancing in my house.”
