“I’m just saying, I’d step up and help make Yvette feel better. And if I could help mediate between the girls, I would.”

“No offense, but you’re kinda the reason they haven’t been given a chance to make up. You’ve gone out of your way to put us between them.”

“And just think about if I use those powers for good.”

I sit back, puffing out a laugh. “You’re too much.”

“You don’t think I could do it?”

“No, I think you can. But how about you step up now? During the camping trip, you should help Yvette and Tabitha make up. You’ll be fixing your karma, and Yvie will see how diligent and sweet you can be.”

He winces. “You want me to do it before we break up?”

I nudge him. “It’ll help you get with Yvie. At some point, we have to call an end to all this pretending.”

He sighs. “Yeah. I guess you're right.”

“Of course, I’m right.”

“Are you baking for the camping trip?”

I side-eye him. “Who are you talking to?”

“Yes. I am so fake dating the right girl.”

I smirk. “Why are you getting so excited? My baking will be for Lewis.”

“I’m driving you out there. Doesn’t your driver get a treat?”

“Okay, I’ll bake some for you.” I chew my fingernail, giggling. “You know, seeing as you’re here, you could help me bake something for dinner tonight.”

He winces. “We’re still doing that?”

“Of course.”

“We can blow it off and get one-on-one time with our crushes instead.”

“Parker, it’s dinner with your family. It’s not a brutal punishment.”

“Maybe for you,” he grumbles.

I place a hand on his wrist. “Do you really not want to do it? Because I won’t go if you really don’t want me to.”

He stares at my hand on him, and after coming to my senses, I swiftly remove it.

“No, we’ll do it,” he says. “Like you said. It’s good practice.”

We finish eating in silence, except for the music. I brought my phone over so Parker could stream the new Frontier Leaders album. Brandy sneaks into the kitchen and sits by Parker’s side, happily awaiting a chunk of waffle.

Wow. Why does this feel so easy?

Yesterday, when Lewis entered my house, he acted like I was a freak at the mere suggestion of dancing. Now, sitting with Parker feels effortless and uncomplicated. And it’s always fun, bopping to some of my favorite songs.

I scroll through my favorite recipes website on my phone. “So what do you want to make for your family?”

“Something chewy so they can’t speak,” Parker jokes.

“Be serious.”
