“Hey,” Parker says, standing from a log. “How are you feeling?”

I slow my pace as I near him. “I’m fine.”

“You ran off fast,” he says. “I wanted to make sure you’re okay.”

I can’t help smiling. “I’m totally fine. I promise.”

He smiles back. “Good. I can’t survive this trip without my partner in crime.”

I giggle. “That’s what I am?”

Parker steps closer and links his arm with mine. “You keep pointing out that what we’re doing is shady, so I think the title fits.”

I playfully nudge him. “I hear we’re playing frisbee.”

“Does the daredevil want to get her frisbee on?”

“I have terrible aim and my throws lack anything resembling power, but I’m happy to cheer on my fake boyfriend.” I give him a wink. “But maybe I’ll cheer on my crush just a little harder.”

He laughs, leading me toward the lake. “That’s the spirit. Do you think Yvie will cheer for me?”

“Yvie thinks you’re boyfriend material,” I say, secretly loving how much it makes him blush. “If Lewis doesn’t up his game, she will definitely cheer you on.”

“But she kissed him after you two left your tent.”

“It was a peck. Pecks lack passion.”

The possibilities send a flurry of emotions across Parker’s face. His dang infectious smile fills me with excitement. But it’s not excitement for me and Lewis. If crying on a camp toilet taught me anything, it’s that Parker means a great deal to me. If he wants to be with Yvie, then I’ll do my best to show her what a wonderful guy he can be.

Twenty-Seven

While the parents gotdinner ready, everyone gathered by the lake to toss the frisbee around. Tabitha sat by my side as I watched. We didn’t talk much. She mostly cheered on Kai, while I watched Yvie and Parker. Shamelessly, she used a baby-voice to coax him into teaching her the best frisbee-throwing technique.

I kept my distance throughout dinner. I’d gone easy on Yvette because of my guilt, but that doesn’t mean I think she’s genuine. I still don’t believe her feelings for Lewis are real, and I can’t say it’s any different with Parker. Before I can let him go, I need to know she can be trusted with his heart. I can’t end this fake relationship to later find out she put him through a nightmare.

From across the campfire, I watch Yvette snuggle into Lewis while keeping her eyes on Parker. These boys aren’t dumb. They have to realize she has a foot in one relationship, while the other foot sneaks into another. Parker might say he doesn’t mind being used if he’s getting what he wants, but he can’t feel good about this.
