After dinner, I keep my eyes on Lewis. He’s aware Parker and Yvie have feelings for each other. Whether they’re genuine or not is beside the point. I just hate the idea of Lewis feeling bad.

“Hey Lewis,” I say after rinsing off my plate. “How are you doing?”

His eyes twinkle against the nearby blaze. “Yeah, all right. This trip is always the highlight of spring break. Are you enjoying yourself?”

I nod. “Yeah. It’s my first time camping, and so far so good.”

“We have so many camping newbies this year. Should make it a trip to remember.”

I lift onto the balls of my feet. “All in good ways, I hope.”

Lewis looks around the campfire. “I hope so too.”

I plant my heels on the ground. “Everything okay with you and Yvie?”

He sighs, rubbing the back of his neck. “I really don’t know. She doesn’t seem to want to spend time with me.”

“She was sitting pretty close to you.”

“But not talking to me. I’m a glorified couch cushion.”

I let out a nervous laugh. “You’re more than that.”

He smiles. “At least you see that.”

My voice lowers. “I’ve always seen there’s more to you.”

“Lewis!” Yvette calls from her log by the fire. “I’m getting cold. Come back and snuggle with me.”

Lewis mumbles a laugh. “Back to couch cushion duties.”

Without thinking, I grab onto his arm. “You don’t have to go running back to her.”

“Huh?”

I let him go. “She’s making you jump through hoops.”

“I told you, Kylie, I’m not letting her go.”

I nod as he moves toward her. Over his shoulder, I catch her smirk and wicked glance my way. Just how much more obvious must she be before he wakes up?

After all the dishes are cleaned, the parents take a cooler of drinks down to the boat, leaving us kids at the campfire.

“Hey Milo,” Kai calls out from the log he shares with Tabitha. “Truth or dare?”

Milo frowns, waving a hand. “No way.”

“Go on. It’s a camping tradition,” his brother encourages. “Pick. Truth or dare?”

When Jamie nudges him, Milo rolls his eyes and says, “Truth.”

Kai grins, rubbing his hands together. “When was the first time you fantasized about Jamie?”

My gut tightens with second-hand fear. Sweat builds on my forehead, scared someone will ask me the same thing about Lewis.

How freaking embarrassing.

Milo glances at Jamie and then the rest of the group. “I dunno. It was so long ago. I just thought I’d stay invisible to her, so I didn’t really count the days.”
