Now I need to chug water for a completely different reason. The confrontation has left my heart pounding like it’s run a mile.

When I return to the campfire, Parker pats the empty space beside him. I shake my head, instead sitting by Tabitha. Parker scoffs, getting up and moving closer to Yvette. Even with Lewis on her other side, Yvette listens to Parker like he’s the most fascinating person at the campsite.

Like me, does she suspect his game answer was about her?

Ugh. Why would Parker lie to my face and say he was talking about me? I thought we were supposed to be honest with each other. Although, he did keep details of his time alone with Yvette from me. And then he kissed me when no one was watching.

Ugh. This is so confusing.

The game comes to a close as we get distracted by other conversations. Soon, everyone starts heading off to bed. When Lewis yawns, I can’t help feeling sleepy and I’m happy to retreat to my sleeping bag.

Yvette sits beside Parker. “I’m not tired yet.”

Parker smiles at her. “Me neither.”

I’m already two steps away from the campfire. Can I pivot without being super embarrassing about it?

“Umm,” I mutter, turning back to the campfire as Lewis sits back down.

“I definitely won’t fall asleep yet,” Lewis says.

Yvette pats the space beside her. “Are you staying, Kylie?”

There’s space by Lewis. This could be my best shot. Snuggling up to him while everyone else has turned in for the night.

When Yvette creeps closer to Parker, my stomach flips.

“Umm, no,” I mumble. “I’m too tired.”

“Okay, good night,” Yvette blurts.

“Night, Kylie,” Lewis says.

I smile and wave at him. When I glance at Parker, he barely smiles at me.

Is this him giving me space? Or, is he mad I’m not taking this opportunity?

Of course, he’s mad at me. He wants Lewis distracted so he can have Yvie all to himself.

My stomach flips again. I can’t watch Parker and Yvie cuddling by the fire. I escape into my tent and shimmy into the sleeping bag, feeling more awake than ever. How could I possibly sleep when my imagination can conjure up the worst things going on by the fire?

I lie on the camp bed, listening to the muffled voices outside. The only thing coming out clearly is Yvette’s laugh.

Ugh.

The conversation pivots between the boys, and my heart warms as they joke around. When their voices die out, Yvie basically begs for their attention. The conversation seemingly revolves around her, until I hear footsteps.

“Yeah, I gotta head in,” Lewis says. “I can’t keep my eyes open.”

“Okay, good night, babe,” Yvette says, much more loudly than anything else she’s said.

She’s still marking her territory with him.

Maybe she doesn’t want Parker?

Maybe she doesn’t want either of them and enjoys getting them to fight over her.

There’s no good night from Parker, so I assume he’s still sitting with her. I sit up, squinting as if it’ll help me listen better. I do catch the hummed words shared between Yvie and Parker. Their faint whispering is so much worse. It’s more intimate.
