I nod, searching his eyes as Yvie’s voice circles in my mind. Her complaints of him not paying enough attention and not doing anything romantic for her.

He tilts his head, taking me in. “Maybe she was the wrong girl. Maybe with the right girl it wouldn’t feel so hard.”

I wet my chapped lips. “Yeah, maybe.”

He steps aside, rubbing my arm. “I’ll get out of the way so you can use the bathroom.”

“Thanks,” I mumble and step inside.

I take a while to collect myself. My head is clogged with heavy thoughts, and my heart wants to shut down entirely. By the time I join the others, most have finished breakfast and are talking about playing volleyball.

“Hey,” Parker whispers, pulling me to the side. “Lewis said, you and he almost had a moment.”

My brow furrows. “He told you that?”

Parker chews his lip, nodding.

Did they talk about swapping girlfriends last night? Was Parker expecting this news?

I shrug. “He just wanted comfort.”

“Then you should give it to him. I don’t want to stand in your way.”

I swallow hard. “Are you sure?”

“They’re broken up, aren’t they?”

“That’s what he said.”

“Then there’s no reason for us to keep up the charade. If he’s the guy you want, you should go after him.”

I nod slowly, my head and heart glitching out.

“We’re breaking up?” he asks with mild hesitation.

I bite into my bottom lip, hoping his hesitancy takes over, stopping me from saying this. “Yes.”

Parker blows out a hard breath and there’s a tremble in his hands. “No time like the present.”

“Wait. You want to do it here?”

Parker increases his volume. “That’s it, we’re through.”

My hands clench into fists and dread tightens the knots in my back. “Now?”

Parker’s eyebrows raise and he gives a slight nod. As his friends gather around, he becomes someone I don’t recognize. “You know this isn’t working. We need to stop kidding ourselves.”

“I... I...” My words disappear as the faces of Kai, Tabitha, Jamie, Milo and Tyler blur around me.

Kai steps beside Parker and plants a hand on his shoulder. “You sure you wanna be doing this, man?”

Tabitha and Jamie get on either side of me.

“How did this happen?” Tabitha asks.

Perplexion creases Jamie’s face as she looks at me. “I thought everything was sweet with you two.”

Parker nudges Kai’s hand off him and then gestures at me. “Kylie agrees. It’s not just me.”
