“Do you even know what you’ll say?”

“I’ll figure it out. Look, I appreciate the ride here, but you really don’t have to stay,”

“But a good boyfriend makes nice with his girlfriend’s friends.”

I retch. “You don’t need to lay it on so thick. She’s finding out the truth.”

“That doesn’t mean she’ll buy it. I’m gonna make sure she sees me as boyfriend material, otherwise she’ll blow this.”

“No, she won’t.”

“I doubt it,” he replies smugly. “She could barely contain herself in the school hallway and almost outed us in front of everyone.”

“So, you want to stay?”

He pecks my cheek. “I’m staying, girlfriend.”

“Do you have to keep calling me girlfriend? It’s not exactly natural sounding.”

“Maybe I need to work on a nickname for you.”

“Or, you could call me Kylie.”

“Mmm. I’ll find something cute to call you.”

“Okay,” Josie calls out through cupped hands. “I get it. You two can’t handle being apart. But can you hurry up and order so I can get this story?”

I leave Parker so he can order our smoothies. I edge toward Josie’s table with a deep inhale.

Here goes nothing.

When our smoothiesarrive at the table, Josie fires up. “I want to know how this happened. I’ll believe whatever Kylie tells me, but I don’t know you, Parker. I want to see if you’re lying because I won’t stand for you hurting my best friend.”

“I won’t hurt Kylie. You have my word.”
