Josie smiles with discern. “I haven’t started grilling you yet, Parker.”

He glances at me with a chuckle. “Oh boy.”

I sit forward and give Josie puppy-eyes. “Are you peeved at me?”

She sits forward, whispering, “No, of course not. I’m just confused.” She swallows hard, glancing at Parker. “I just thought you liked someone else.”

“Oh, Lewis,” Parker blurts. “Yeah, I know all about that.”

Josie blinks at him, sitting back. “You do?”

Parker gestures at me. “Just like Kylie knows about my crush on Yvette.”

Her jaw drops. “What? This is sick.”

“Josie, I...”

She cuts me off. “Not only is it sick, it’s beyond twisted. Why are you two doing this?”

Without much thought, I snatch my smoothie and busy myself with sucking through the straw. I don’t stop until my skull aches from the chilled liquid.

Josie smirks. “A brain freeze ain’t getting you out of answering my question.”

Parker laughs. “Should I take this one?”

I lift a hand, squinting until the ache subsides. “Okay, the truth is, Parker and I were talking yesterday during my café shift.”

“And during classes yesterday,” Parker adds. “Although, she didn’t want to give me the time of day.”

“Can you blame her?” Josie teases.

Parker smirks. “Hey.”

“Anyway,” I say, “We continued chatting after my shift, and we found a lot of common ground. And when he drove me home...”

“You drove her home?” Josie blurts.

Parker laughs. “Let her finish a sentence.”

I shrug, blurting, “Well, let’s just say, we decided to get closer.”

“Get closer?” Josie’s lip upturns with perplexion. “This makes no sense. Although, it does explain why your texts last night made zero sense.”

“We got closer because our crushes started dating,” Parker admits.

“That’s no reason to start dating.”

I clear my throat, and croak, “Remember how I said it was fake?”

Nervous laughter rolls out of Josie. “What, like some sort of fake romance?”

“You can’t tell anyone,” Parker rushes.

Josie deadpans him. “That’s what this is? A fake relationship?”

“It’s to get Lewis,” I blurt, feeling ridiculous as each syllable leaves my tongue. “It’s my last shot.”

“How...” she falters. “How would this make Lewis want you?”
