The comment leaves an uncomfortable niggle in my stomach. “Are you sure you want to sit with me? What about Yvette? Aren’t you missing a shot with her?”

He shrugs, watching the others milling around Yvette. “She has everyone fussing over her.” He turns back to me and smiles. “Besides, if I don’t sit with you, you won’t have anyone.”

My heart flutters. “I’ll be okay on my own.”

“No, it’s okay. The longer we’re away from everyone else, it will increase Lewis’s suspicions. I want to make sure he’s jealous.”

“Jealous of what?”

He nudges me, grinning. “Of me getting to spend alone time with you.”

I splutter a laugh. “Yeah, right. He’s probably annoyed that everyone won’t leave him alone with Yvette.”

“Trust me, he’ll be thinking about you,” Parker murmurs. “You jumped off the edge, and his girl wouldn’t.”

“He’ll really care that much?”

Parker smirks. “He will because I’ll keep rubbing it in.”

I click my tongue. “Parker.”

“How can I not boast about my awesome girlfriend? It’d be suspicious if I didn’t.”

I swallow hard, watching Lewis wrap his arms around Yvette’s bare torso as the others chat and laugh with them. “Don’t make a big deal about this in front of everyone. It’s too embarrassing having everyone’s eyes on me.”

“But you want Lewis’s eye on you?”

“Well, yeah.”

“Look at Yvie, she loves the attention,” Parker comments. “He’s not dragging her away anytime soon.”

“Are you going to be okay, sharing her with everyone else?”

He wiggles his eyebrows. “I’ll make do just fine.”

Ick.

I turn my gaze away from the others. Instead, focusing on the gentle breeze, scent of wildflowers, and the cozy warmth of the midday sun.

Parker reclines against the base of the tree and his eyelids lower. When he stops motor-mouthing, it’s actually peaceful in his presence. Delighting in the serenity, I run my fingers between the blades of grass and let the wind blow-dry my hair.

For a moment, my imagination takes over, and Lewis is reclining beside me, playing with the wet locks of my hair.

If only it was real.

Parker opens his eyes, letting his gaze run over me.

I smile, knowing how close I am to my dreams coming true.

Footsteps sound from the right, and I look over my shoulder at the dirt track. I smile and motion in that direction. “Oh, it’s Milo. We should call him over.”

Parker’s lip upturns. “Really?”

I nudge him. “Don’t be mean. Milo’s cool.”

“Uh, no he isn’t.”

I roll my eyes. “Whatever. I think he’s a nice guy.”
