Lewis laughs. “Glad to see you’re excited.”

I blush, looking down at my shoes before I embarrass myself further. “Sorry. Just glad not to get there on my own.”

“No sweat,” Lewis says. “It’ll be cool to head over together.”

My heart swells, and I bite my lip in anticipation of another squeal.

Lewis Freaking Allen and I are going on a date together.

Granted, it’s to meet up with our actual dates. But, for now, I can forget that part.

“Okay, cool,” I say, hoping to sound casual. “I’ll see you later tonight then.”

“Meet out front at six-fifteen,” Lewis says, “and then we’ll walk to the bus stop?”

I contract every muscle inside me to halt the need to squeal. It doesn’t take fifteen minutes to walk to the bus stop. I’m gettingextraone-on-one time with him.

“Okay,” I say in a higher pitch because I’m on the cusp of squealing. “See you then.”

I turn on my heels and pace to my house, struggling to keep the squealing excitement inside me.

When I shut the front door behind me, I bundle my hands into fists and jump in place.

“Yes!” I shriek, punching the air as the delight takes over my body.

“Kikki?” Mom asks, backtracking down the hallway.

I skip toward her, kiss her on the cheek, and keep moving toward the staircase.

“What’s going on?” she asks, bewildered.

“I have to get ready for my date,” I call, racing upstairs and letting a trail of giggles spill out of me.

In my bedroom, I scoop up my phone and call Parker.

He answers. “Hi?”

“Don’t pick me up tonight,” I blurt.

“What?” Panic reverberates in his voice. “But you promised to come tonight.”

“Yeah, I’m still going,” I reply. “I’m just going with Lewis instead.”

He sighs into the receiver. “Okay, slow down. Can you start at the beginning?”

“I just organized to take the bus into town with Lewis,” I explain. “I told him you’ll be late and that you told me to meet you there.”

“I have to be late tonight?”

“I don’t really care, to be honest. I’m going with Lewis. Nothing else matters.”

“Geez, Green, I’m impressed.”

I mumble a laugh. “Thanks.”

“So, what’s happening with Yvie?”

“I have no idea. She doesn’t live near us, so I assume she’s meeting us at dinner.”
