Eleven

With a huff, I endmy call with Josie. I rambled about every thought and feeling I had, making her head spin. Just like Friday morning at school, Josie repeated that I wasn’t making sense. But I needed to purge.

At the lake, so many things were perfect. The kiss, the sitting under a shady tree, holding hands, and even the cliff jump.

It was just the wrong guy.

Thinking about sharing all those moments with Parker makes me want to rip out my hair. I hate that I’m having all these giddy moments with him instead of Lewis. Now, leaning against a window on the second floor landing of my house, I stare at the fence between mine and Lewis’s homes.

It’s crazy I’m putting on this facade. And I have to do it again tonight. Can’t I just skip all this pretending? Can’t Lewis and I just be together now?

I sigh against the window frame.

All I want is time alone with him.

No Parker.

No Yvette.

Below, I spy Lewis taking out the trash.

Normally, this is as far as it goes. I stare at him until he returns inside. But now we’ve talked. We’ve shared a car ride. He’s seen me kiss another boy and his stare lingered.

Goosebumps roll down my arms and I dash away from the window. I rush down the staircase and race to the front door.

“Kikki? Where’s the fire?” Mom calls out.

“I’ll be right back,” I reply, pulling the front door open.

When I step off the porch, I spot him walking away from the trash cans.

Before I chicken out, I jog to the fenceline. “Lewis!”

He looks up and around before landing on me. “Oh, hi.”

Catching my breath, I blurt, “How are you getting to dinner tonight?”

He gives me an uneasy look. “I’m not going with Parker. Nothing personal, but...”

“I’m not going with Parker either,” I blurt. When surprise hits his face, I add, “I just mean, he texted. He’ll be late.Again. He thought I should meet him there. I was just wondering if you...”

I trail off when my gut tenses, warning this is a bad idea.

“Oh, do you want to go there with me?” Lewis asks.

Yes! Just you and me!

“Well, there’s a bus that heads into Main Street at six-thirty. We could take that,” he suggests.

A squeal escapes me before I can catch it.
